Hi,
I experience a similar behavior:
System:
- Core i7 920
- Asus P6T
- 3GB DDR3 Memory
- Win XP Pro
- 2x Spinpoint-F1 1TB Raid 0
- Onboard sound (to be replaced )
The Orion CPU indicator displays in a certain song: ~30-40%
Windows Taskmanager Overall CPU indicator shows 6%.
I see actually 5 cores (of are used noticeably. (equals the amount of soft synths in my song)
4 cores use ~7%
1 core uses ~20%. (this is a bad ass pad;-) )
So it seems Orion does not 'averages' the CPU usage like windows in its overall CPU indicator, but sums it up.

cpu usage wrongIt doesn't sum anything up, it measures the time from the start of the audio block rendering to the finish, using the QueryPerformance() system function.
Logically, this must always be the weakest link when multicore CPUs are used. So in your example: 1) The bad-ass pad inside the parallelized code eats 20%, hence, the minimum CPU usage is 20%. 2) The main, non-parallelized render thread, which is used eg for event processing or the master strip, eats 10% because you used some bad ass virtual analogue mastering compressor as an insert on the main output, for instance. The total CPU usage is thus 30%. The 6% Windows shows can be considered correct also, but it is a misleading number, as it suggests you can still add plenty of CPU hogs into your Orion project when in reality you can't, as you will experience dropouts. cpu usage wrongthanks Richard, i never understood how it was calculated
does it means that it's possible to use 4 "bad ass pas" eating 30% each ? the total cpu usage would show 40 % = 30% +10 % (master strip) Yamaha CS-30, Roland SH-1, Roland MKS70, Focusrite Scarlett 18i6, Yamaha FS1R, Oberheim Matrix 1000, Novation Remote 37SL, Korg Legacy, Alesis M1Active 520, Novation Launchpad Pro, Push2, Intel i7-7700HQ
cpu usage wrongI just perceive the cpu usage display as some sort of vague indication that I mostly ignore. Some sort of voodoo that I don't care to understand. The numbers themselves mean nothing to me.. I just see bigger is worse, lower is better.
If I begin running into cpu problems, I use it to find which plugin is causing the problem.. or to see what adjustments I can make to a patch to make it more efficient if it is causing an issue.

cpu usage wrongIf the CPU usages would be summed, it would mean also the maximum would be as high as number of the processing threads used. Averaging that would only be indicator how much left till fully using the CPU power. However in reality it won't tell you if you have one super hogger on one channel which eats 60% and rest eat just 0-5%. Average would be then ie. 11%, but it would still start suttering if the one 60% channel was added effect which also eats CPU alot and maxes up the processing time.
cpu usage wrongThnx for the explanation Rich!
