Low Latency Audio In Windows 10I went to the Build event in Sydney yesterday and learned that Microsoft have put low latency audio into their new Universal Windows Platform (UWP), which is what you use to make apps that will run across any device. They had a drum kit app that worked quite well. They weren't quoting latency figures but it definitely seemed useably real-time. Now might be a good time for Synapse to look at making some Windows 10 apps, while there is not a lot of competition. That said, Windows 10 is bloody awful and I won't be upgrading any time soon.

Re: Low Latency Audio In Windows 10
If I may ask what's awful about Win 10 ? I've never used the beta so wouldn't know but I did "reserve" a copy from my Win 8.1 laptop. So your advice is not to take advantage of the free upgrade ?

Re: Low Latency Audio In Windows 10Thanks for the link but I don't really have time to wade through 20 pages of the Gearslutz thread. I might let my Win 8.1 laptop upgrade but no way I'm going to let my Win 7 studio computer upgrade. No Drivers for my Delta AP192 soundcard.
Re: Low Latency Audio In Windows 108 weeks out from launch, the current preview build is in far worse shape than the first preview build of Windows 8 was 7 months before release. There are still heaps of bugs and most of my Windows 8 apps either don't work at all or won't work properly. e.g. I can open the Kindle app but I can't change any of the settings.
The new Start Menu is also really bad. It's like they've taken all the worst aspects of the Win7 Start Menu and stuffed them into the Start Screen that nobody (except me) likes in Windows 8. i.e. I don't think they have fixed what people didn't like about Windows 8, they have just tried to stuff all the old stuff from Win7 in as well, even though they know everyone had stopped using it. (The user data they collected showed that use of the Start Menu in Win7 was as low as 18% for some tasks, compared to XP, and only 40% overall.) It seems to me like an admission that they don't know how to fix it so they are just throwing everything in to shut people up. The result just doesn't work. The new browser is just a browser, it doesn't feel like anything new or special in any way. The desktop is pretty much the same as it was in Vista, Win7 and Win8, so that's probably a good thing. They've added multiple desktops and changed the look slightly but, apart from that, it works just as it always has. Microsoft have already said that not all the new features will make it into the initial release and, from what I've seen, I think they'll be lucky to have something reasonably stable by July 29th. At the moment I have it installed on a 10" tablet and it is so bad that I sometimes have trouble just sending them feedback. The free upgrade thing is available for a full year so my advice would be to hold off until there have been a few rounds of updates and third party developers have had a chance to make any changes to their software/drivers/etc. that they might need to. Maybe look at giving it to yourself for Xmas. If you are thinking about a Windows 10 tablet, I don't think it will ever be usable for touch. Right now, the touch experience is about on par with trying to use Windows 7 on a touchscreen. Touch targets are far too small and packed too close together. e.g. Trying to close a tab in the new Edge browser usually takes me 3 or 4 presses and opening a new tab is even harder. Trying to access "All Apps" in the Start Menu always also brings up the shutdown options and trying to hit the "Collapse" button in Action Centre usually also results in turning on Flight Mode. If you've tried to use the Windows 8 desktop on a tablet, you will know how bad it is. Basically, what they have done is to get rid of all the "Metro" stuff from Windows 8, except for the one thing everybody hated about it (Live Tiles) and replace it with a "Tablet Mode" that is little more than forcing every window to open full screen. It's an unmitigated disaster. Personally, I can't imagine a time when I will abandon Windows 8 for Windows 10. Windows 10 feels to me like Windows 7.2, a big step backwards from Windows 8. I like to use a mix of "metro" and desktop features - I'm typing this in the Metro version of IE11, which is easily my favourite browser now - but Windows 10 forces you to choose between modes and do everything one way or the other. Instead of empowering users to use whatever suits them for each task, they are funnelling us all down one of two paths for everything we do. That might be OK if they were offering us lots of compelling reasons to go that way but all the emphasis at the conference the other day was on their new Universal Apps, which are things you'll want to use on your tablet, which will be nightmare. It's a return to the bad, old Microsoft, where different departments are pulling in different directions. I'm staying away for as long as I possibly can. Re: Low Latency Audio In Windows 10

Re: Low Latency Audio In Windows 10
Not to mention, nearly daily upgrade reboots required That's not exactly convenient and it's dangerous too-- power failure while one of those you would be installing a fresh windows for sure.
Re: Low Latency Audio In Windows 10Well, its still pre beta.

Re: Low Latency Audio In Windows 10No, it is in public beta and it's just 8 weeks to full release. If anyone is interested, here is a link to the session on developing audio/video creation apps - http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2015/3-634

Re: Low Latency Audio In Windows 10Well Ok then thanks that's all I need to hear. I have reserved a copy on my laptop and if I'm reading correctly it will automatically download so I may even cancel my reservation.
I'm typing this on my WinXP internet machine which I still love. With the ZUNE theme it's still the best looking version of Windows to my eyes. I've grown to like Win 8.1 more and have it dialed in to do almost everything from the Desktop. Once in a while I'll go to the Metro screen but it's pretty rare I need to go there. I posted this screenshot at another forum where they were discussing the look of Win 8.1 : With the Shortcut Arrows gone and some Icons culled from the net I think it looks pretty nice and is functional. I use the huge icons because it's a touchscreen and they are easy to tap open.

Re: Low Latency Audio In Windows 10
You do if you're constantly looking for folders and shortcuts................... I don't spend hours looking at the desktop either but the time I do look at it while launching a program is very pleasant indeed.....
Re: Low Latency Audio In Windows 10
Most of the stuff i dont use (i only use about 6 progs, they are all top right) , and the folders get put away every few weeks... Windows 11 Home - 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-12400 2.50 GHz -32GB RAM

Re: Low Latency Audio In Windows 10There is something very weird going on in the forums lately. See my post above? To me it just looks like a link but last night I wrote this as well "No, it is in public beta and it's just 8 weeks to full release. If anyone is interested, here is a link to the session on developing audio/video creation apps" but none of it showed up. So when I went to put it back in just now, it all shows up in the "Edit" window. A similar thing happened to my last thread, where a whole sentence got cut for no discernable reason but was still visible when I went to edit it. Has anyone else seen this behaviour?
