PiracyModerators: Christophe, Mark PiracyYou're right Williabong. But by the time you find out something you possess could be pirated or plagarised, you stand to easily be as guilty as someone who went out of their way to steal something. Even though you may profess that you didn't know at all, and it will be immediately disposed of. You will from then on be judged as harshly as a proffesional thief. Just as one who unknowingly uses counterfeit money. They could blame it on the bank, the previous store, they found it on the street... By that point, it sounds like a pathetic excuse. And for all anyone knows, a printing press could be in their basement. Not to make you paranoid Willabong, just prepared is all. It all permeates to the cleanest of households sadly.
Piracy
Question: How would you engineer the perfect human? Answer: I would make sure that he did not steal shit from torrent sites and the K-mart. ...oh, and maybe give him super strength, the ability to fly and all that shit, too.
PiracyWhy did I suddenly hear the voice of HAL from 2001: A Space Oddessy?
"This mission is too important Dave, and I can not allow you to jeopordise it..." All to find out the poor box of resistors was wrestling with it's own sense of exploration and mortality and knowing more than the others did. The worst part of it was - you couldn't really blame HAL at that point. He was a pawn that felt like a king. He wasn't 'stealing' per say, but he just wasn't 'giving'. And that's the other thing as well. Even if I or WIllabong et al merely use Orion's own synths, and home made samples. At some point someone will say 'You stole that bass from Depeche Mode', or 'You must be using a Pro53, but it's not listed?' And at first we'll say 'Nope, all done with Orion' But we will still take glee in the fact they think we stole something.... And then like HAL, we'll have to kill them.
Piracy
Does he steal from Wal-Mart too? Or from friends, neighbors, gf, wife? I'm sure there's something he cares about, and even if there isn't, wait until I give his hard drive a good, old-fashioned format when I detect a pirated Orion on it :box: Admin - Synapse Audio Software

Piracy
Thou dost protest too much, methinks.
PiracyWell, well, well.
Stealing is not appropriate in any case. Like the music industry always likes to pretend: 100.000 copies via Torrent = 100.000 * 1 $ = 100.000 $ loss. That is absolutely eyewash. Realistically, maybe 10 or 15% of people downloading this specific track would also buy it, if not available via torrent. The rest just would not do so as people might not be that interested in this kind of music. The loss is 10.000$ to 15.000$. What I want to say is: You only should take the real, potential customer base into account which would go to a shop and buy a product if there was no copy on the net available, not the overall amount of downloaders. E.g., Photoshop. Nice to play with but you would never spend 800$ just to play around. Only if you had a real interest (maybe commercial or you earn your life with it as a graphic artist) you would buy it. This is the potential customer base, not all the nerds playing around and faking pictures of their ex-girlfriend on a big boobed body. 10.000 (potential customers) 5.000 buy / 5.000 download -> 5.000 * price = loss The rest just doesn't matter. I had a cracked copy of Orion (3.x or whatever) and played around with it. By that time, there was no reason for me to buy it as I just wanted to play around and try. When I decided to go for pro music, I bought the full version (4.x). I would never payed for it just to play around as it had no real use for me and I did not really worked with software. But now that it has a big value to me, it's worth it's price and of course I buy the software (as one of the potential customer base). PiracyAt the risk of sounding like a preacher, if you take a football from a shop without paying (just to play around with it) you are stealing.
People who steal cannot turn to the judge and say "I didn't really steal it, I was just playing around with it!" And someone needs to protest "me thinks", as there are to many thieves in the world! And isn't it amazing how thieves will always try to justify what they do. Stealing is thievery, and there is no justification for it. End of sermon! Vaz,PolyAna,Knagalis,Sytrus,Wusik4,Golden Asset,

Piracy
A football is a physical good, software isn't. That's a huge difference. The same goes for music or games or whatever. I can't copy a football. It has to be manufactured. This is not the year 2129 and we are not flying on a spaceship called Enterprise. A firm can now make money out of a once developed product. If you want, you can see this as a Grand Theft Auto, as customers have to pay for a one time investment again and again. Just to complete the theroretical aspect. That doesn't mean that I'm ok with it. But if you talk about things, you should bring all the apsect into discussion. To spin this further, what is intellectual proerty? I should not exist. It leads to a protection of idea which is nonsense. Firms in the US even try to protect business models. That is completely ripp off. PiracyUnfortunately things are not black and white in the real world. There's a matter of personal perception vs what is acceptable by the majority of society and so forth.
The same society that put Vanilla Ice and Milli Vanilli to the top of the charts. I think i'll stick to my internal moral compass and deal with any negative consequences as they may come my way.
