Hi gang,
"secrets" is a new track using only Wasp, Plucked String and XR-909. It's atmospheric chillout music along the lines of "p.s", my previous track.

I've also coded a new Flash player on the site to avoid the pesky mp3 hosting problem reported on my last track.
Thanks for listening!

New music from Bit Potion: "secrets"Nicely done! The only thing that's driving me nuts is that 'rim' sound of the 909.
You get something cooler in that User 1 (or User 2 as the case maybe) And I think you'll have something serious on your hands.
New music from Bit Potion: "secrets"Thanks! I dropped the rim sound altogether, and I like it better already. Still working on it, so haven't reposted yet.
New music from Bit Potion: "secrets"Okay removed rim sound and remixed things a bit. Please give it another whirl. Better?

New music from Bit Potion: "secrets"I shouldn't have been so hard on using the rim sound. Just my history with beat boxes, soon as I hear that unmistakable sound - it makes me cringe. But I like your reworking. But dare I say, I think you need a snare in there at some points to make it a little more 'hip moving'. Maybe when those nice arp lines kick in, and replace the open HH with a punchy snappy SD? And I really like those little 'roll' sounds you got at the beggining, and could be brought back further into the song for breaks and stuff.
Great stuff Bit, just need a wee bit more spice on those drums and you'll have a tight trancy chill track for sure.
New music from Bit Potion: "secrets"Thanks for the additional comments. These are very helpful to me as I'm a guitarist (mostly jazz and classical) and I'm always uncertain about the production of the drum and percussion parts. For example, in that newer mix, there actually is a snare on 3 and 4 for much of the track, but obviously I have it mixed so low that it gets lost beneath the open hi hat.
Part of the reason I've been using the XR909 on recent tracks is to force myself to focus on basics and to sort out how to set drums correctly in the mix. To me it always seems that if I set drums higher in the mix, they seem too obviously synthetic and mechanical, even to some degree when using samples on drum rack. Then again, when I focus on listening to drum tracks produced by others, they often seem synthetic too and often intentionally so. For this track, when I bring up the snare in the mix it immediately sounds too much like a beat box. So maybe the thing for me to do is toss the XR909 altogether and stick with drumrack samples to get closer to an organic sound. Hmmm....
New music from Bit Potion: "secrets"Jazz and classical axemanship, very nice background. The 909 is pretty well the staple of modern music for the last 20 years. It's got way more control than most of the predecessors, but it still sounds like a beat box - I hear you on that. The one key I would advise is to have it on a x4 output (if you haven't done so already?) Then you can concentrate on HH's on a separate channel, SD on another, and so on. The trick to make the 909 - and all samplers and rythem machines FTM is to EQ and effect the parts separately, IE; BD would concentrate on low EQ's and no effects per say, HH would concentrate on higher EQ's and possibly slow chorus/flange effects to make it sound more lively and realistic. And SD would be mid EQ's, and a fair bit of reverb and/or delay effects for that impact and space. You'll be amazed the new life it can take on by this format.
I think the 909 goes great with this song. Just needs a little more 'presence and space' around certain elements. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it in no time.
