question about bus poss.Wouldn't Orion be able to handle surround, if more busses were added? Not a feature request, just a question.

question about bus poss.Rich talked about Surround support some time back on the old beta forum....
not sure of its need in music software myself..maybe for film scoring but not your average sequencer/host Windows 11 Home - 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-12400 2.50 GHz -32GB RAM
250GB SSD - 1TB HDD | M-Audio Oxygen 25 V
question about bus poss.hey just buy nuendo, its only around $1700
question about bus poss.I actually read that as "question about bus pass". I must be going blind. Probably all that wanking.
I thought I once saw a bitmap in the skins folders for surround mixing, so maybe Rich has toyed with the idea.
question about bus poss.
yes, I was wondering if Orion would be able to generate bus passes in the future. Seriously, though. I was just asking because it would seem to me that more busses, and the fact that multiple outs go out the busses already, that this would be pretty easy to handle. It's true that maybe it's not the most needed function by a lot of people, but if it's already there when more busses are added....... well, I may find myself doing surround mixes sometime in the near future, and it would be nice to use Orion some for that.
question about bus poss.Surround is hardly going to benefit from more busses. With 4 busses you can do 5.1 and even 7.1 already.
The reason why Orion doesn't have a dedicated surround implementation is because some said they'd never use it without video editing to go with. Other obvious flaws of surround is the lack of compatibility, particularly when downmixing, as well as your setup. Only under studio conditions with well calibrated, high-quality speakers is surround of any use. And even then, you hardly go into your studio for recreational listening, so you're stuck with your mix that doesn't work anywhere else. Admin - Synapse Audio Software

question about bus poss. There's so many pseudo to pro plugs for this 'surround sound' now as well. For movies in a big theater, yeah - it's cool. But for a 32" HD Screen and receiver in a small room it can't be appreciated unless you turn it way up. And before the movies done, the landlord is pounding on the door with an eviction notice.

question about bus poss.yes, you're probably right about the not without video editing part.
I was just curious. I remember the first surround class I had several years ago, we were working on a mixer with 8 busses, and the surround was sent out from each bus to a seperate speaker. I just got to thinking about that, and wondered if it would be possible. There's actually a studio in the area that has an audio (not video) project listed under their recent projects, that was done in surround, which is what initially made me think about it.
question about bus poss.Would be more up to your audio card and software/drivers for it I would imagine?
Don't think OP or any other host would allow for 'direct out' of 6 or so channels without going through some form of stereo feed within itself? At best, you could 'stream the tracks individually' and place them in something like WaveLabs Audio Montage, and set for 1+2, 3+4, 5+6 and so on that way...? But again, I'd think you'd need a serious audio card and compliant software for it to even have a chance? And knowing the market today, I'm sure there's a few that might be competitively cheap now? You made me think of the Beatles story of the late 60's. They apparently hired an italian designer to make them a modern unique studio at Apple Corp. or somewhere. It was all nice in design after, but he had built this 18 channel mixing desk, and each channel had it's own speaker! Needless to say, George Harrison quickly learned this was the WORST way to mix his guitars. And I don't think George Martin even dared come around to look at it. Ahead of the time - or just really good weed?
question about bus poss. This approach has some drawbacks though, mainly the lack of surround fx and 2D panning that's standard for surround mixing.
FWIW I have no idea why people want video editing coupled with surround, as I doubt there's that many film makers using Orion, and for holiday videos I don't see the need either. Admin - Synapse Audio Software

question about bus poss.Hey Rich - I'm a 'filmaker' using Orion! (well, atleast for the soundtrack music. )
But highly agree, for low budget art and holiday flicks - it makes me gag. Of course everyone I worked with on this film wanted '3D, HD, Heavy D' whatever. And I had to be the hard ass director and say 'no, noooo. NO!' :rage: Now if I could do a James Cameron epic....
