Absolutely amazing! It made Gary Numan pale into insignificance, despite being on a far more modest scale. After 35 years, they are still the best band I have ever had the privilege to see. Dave Greenfield had three CME controllers but I couldn't see what they were connected to. he is easily the most talented player I've ever seen. He is a human arpeggiator - all night he played very arp-like lines by hand and never missed a beat and for a change he was nice and prominent in the mix.
Last time I saw tehm, they had a front-man and Baz Warne, their guitarist, pretty much just stood there and played. The singer left a couple of years ago and Baz stepped up to do vocals as well. I was a little sceptical as to how he'd go but he was a great front-man. He's got a better voice and he's a better guitarist than Hugh ever was.
It was a greatest hits show and they played 'em all. I really like their last couple of albums, I think they are as good as anything they have ever done, and they played a few of those songs in with the classics. I'm a huge fan of their early stuff but I think the highlight of the night was Always the Sun. It's an awesome song and where it fell a bit flat last time they were here, it went off last night. I have to say though, I've never seen so many balding heads in a mosh-pit in my life.
If the Stranglers come to your town, do not miss them.

The Stranglers Live Last NightGood stuff Bones! Rocket To The Moon, Get A Grip On Yourself, Bear Cage and all that? That's my fave shit of theirs, though Hugh is still like the Joe Strummer of them. Always thought Hugh was kinda the 'ringleader' in ways of songwriting and direction - but you say the guys are holding their own.
BTW - The movie 'Sexy Beast' gets great use out of 'Peaches' at the intro. One of the best Brit movies I've seen in a long time. (Would someone tell Ben Kingsley he's NOT a gangster - though he played an incredible one here. He's gotta do Gandhi II or something now. ) And bald heads in the crowd, I should feel right at home then! Last edited by Dungeon Studio on Sat Mar 14, 2009 11:43 pm, edited 1 time in total.
