Do you expect that the hardware costs of digital synthesis systems will be coming down, the way they did with pocket calculators?
I don' think there's any doubt about it. It's the same technology. The general purpose large-scale integrated circuit is getting more powerful and cheaper. The first computer games were expensive, and now they're cheap. Computer music systems are still expensive because they're new, but they'll get cheaper.
So, you would anticipate that before long we're going to have digital systems that would be comparable in price and capabilities to a portable analog unit such as the Minimoog or the ARP 2600.
Not comparable in price, but infinitely greater in capabilities.

from John Chowning interview..I'm reading "Synthesizers and Computers" a book from 1985 consisting of articles from Keyboard Magazine. There's an interview from 1978 with Dr. John Chowning, "Computer Synthesis Expert at Stanford". Thought this exchange was interesting in retrospect.
from John Chowning interview..I saw Chowning at Sootheby's the other day bidding $500,000.00 on Wendy Carlos old Con Brio synth. I tapped him on the shoulder and said 'Are you crazy?', and he looked at me straight faced and replied 'Like I can't fucking afford it now?'... Touche. :superlol:
from John Chowning interview..he invented FM or PM right?
from John Chowning interview..FM, and well paid for by Yamaha I'm sure.
from John Chowning interview..I've recently made some researches on DSP, and many times I've fonded some documents, thesis etc from the Stanford university.
