Hi Folks,
after sweat pearls on my forehead cause of black screen after BIOS update, I finally managed to get the system up and running. Got a QuadCore Q6600 with (at the moment 2,4 GHz) and have to admit that
Orion is not performing better processing my recent track. CPU load even increased compared to my Core2Duo 2,67 (E6700).
What the hell. Will try to overclock to 3,2 Ghz this weekend and check again. But expected the system to run with 30 to 40% CPU load.
But found out why you guys have excellent performance.
>> I run Orion on studio standard 24/96, not the usual 16/44. That kicks your systems ass. With 16/44 I get 16% CPU load.
GK

QuadCore DisappointmentYou've almost certainly already thought of this, but did you enable MPE?

QuadCore Disappointmenti got an core i7 i920 system yesterday. i shall let you know if there has been any improvement over the last 3.5 years
do you know that at 96khz many synths donot sound like how they sound at 44khz? i dont want to get into this topic, but i had found out 4-5 months back they DO NOT sound the same. i told rich abt it and he did acknowledge abt it. the same goes for vst too.
QuadCore DisappointmentAll the more reason not to work at such a ridiculous sample rate.

for sure! you get a much more decent sound. Why do you think the studio standard is 24/96?
96 KHz for soundproduction is a must for me. No discussion! It's not ridiculous at all as the sound you generate is different from the sound you create with 44KHz. When you downsample, a sound created in 96 sounds different than the one created in 44 from the beginning. But I will not start discussing this topic again... and again. As a workaround i will go with 44 for automation and back to 96 for production. Last edited by DaZoid on Thu Apr 30, 2009 7:38 am, edited 1 time in total.
QuadCore DisappointmentYeah just export in 96 kHz when you're done.
fwiw, the Intel i7 should be a lot faster. Admin - Synapse Audio Software

QuadCore DisappointmentYou could try to double your latency. Basically 10ms@44kHz latency with same buffer size at 96kHz would performance wise mean same as if you'd use 4.6ms at 44kHz. So increase the buffer size to 256 samples or even to 512 samples if you use 96kHz. As those are processed faster, precieved latency stays low.
Also note that the new Quad has lower clock frequency, so each core maxes out faster, which in Orion's meter means high CPU usage (highest usage from all cores), however you probably could almost double the effects/insruments before it would show up on CPU usage as the two extra cores has processing power. Do you have the Intel Hyperthreading enabled? I recall it shows up as 8 cores with quadcore? I'm not 100% sure if Orion is properly optimized for "8 cores", as there's fixed limit of 8 cores on the multithreading. The CPU cores increased faster than we expected, but it's not big deal to fix later.

There's such thing as a "studio standard"? I get it about working in 24-bit audio cause of the headroom, but why is 96kHz considered a studio standard? All audio CDs are 44.1 anyway (48 for mp3s) SoundCloud ::: Facebook
QuadCore Disappointment
Well it's not a written standard nailed on a wall by a music committee. But many or most of pro producers/studios work with that, yes. re. 44.1 CD. See my post above. Last edited by DaZoid on Thu Apr 30, 2009 8:25 am, edited 1 time in total.
QuadCore DisappointmentIt's a studio standard, because anything sounds good after 24 Bit 'processing'.

QuadCore Disappointmentthat's the best advice I've heard all day.
QuadCore Disappointmentyes, 24/96 does sound better, especially playing at max volume thru the speakers of a Ford Escort Mk3 :biglol:

QuadCore Disappointment Auch fur mich ! Bitte ein Bit ! My town Rethel and Bitburg are sister cities
QuadCore DisappointmentI still think the E8500 could handle ur projects better than the Quad
and its still much cheaper the the i7
