okay so i confirm it, my new proc core i7 920 blows the shit out of the *uck. i totally recommend this for anyone who is having to struggle with their older cpu.
on my older proc amd athlon x2 4800+ (2x2.4ghz), my current sfs (26ch, 71fx) was chockin up the cpu. in fact i was unable to proceed because just loading the sfs made me sad and miserable. but today it is a distant memory to be forgotten in the bliss of my new setup.
nothing has changed since the old and new except proc+ram+board. same os, same emu1820 and same driver. now i hook up firewire device and still get around 10 ms latency.
and oh just one tiny tip if your going down the i7 path: turn off hyperthreading or else you may want to hang your self

QuadCore Blissssssssssssssss (core i7 920)That's cool man, I remember when I went from single 2.66 to quad 3 and it kicks ass not to be limited to bouncing all the time.
I have an Intel Core 2 Extreme, are the pins on the processor the same as i7 if I want to upgrade some time? Enjoy !
QuadCore Blissssssssssssssss (core i7 920)Congrats to your new machine!
Had a dream last night about bulding a new music tower with i7 :biglol: for the new studio. Found a super cool place yesterday here in Stuttgart. There is a huuuge old building near the train station. There's a club (Rocker33) there and as I saw y-day, many, many little studios, creative cells, artists, a BMX shop, photographer etc. etc. Saw that in Berlin a while ago but was really surprised that we have something like that here in Stuttgart. Rent is 350 EUR for a room which is perfect for a studio. Might get a place in the studio of a friend who has his DJ School there. QuadCore Blissssssssssssssss (core i7 920)nope they have different sockets as the architecture has changed. for the core2series it is LGA775 (771 for xenon) and for the core i7 series it is LGA 1336 (same for xenon). your renting space because you dont have space in your house? or do have angry neighbors?
QuadCore Blissssssssssssssss (core i7 920)i also contacted emu customer support and here are some tip advised for preventing clicks and pops. these are applicable to any asio card
1. Change Processor Scheduling to 'Background Services' Navigate to the Advanced page of the System applet. Click on the Performance Settings button, select its Advanced tab and click on 'Background Services' for Processor Scheduling . This is one of the few essential Windows XP tweaks, since it benefits the performance of ASIO drivers, which run as background tasks. For anyone using ASIO drivers (and nowadays that includes just about every PC musician), this is the most essential tweak of all, because ASIO drivers run as background services in Windows. Music software and hardware developers Steinberg rely on this setting to ensure low latency without dropouts, and you may be able to run your audio interface at a significantly lower latency after this tweak. 2. Switch Off Power Schemes In the Power Options applet, choose the 'Always On' power scheme. Change the settings for monitor and hard disk turn off and System standby to 'Never', so that your PC doesn't unexpectedly conk out during song playback . The wrong setting here can cripple the processing performance of many modern PCs, because of over-clever power schemes that throttle your processor to a slower clock speed to keep it cool................. 3. Disable System Sounds Select the 'No Sounds' scheme on the Sounds tab of the Sounds and Audio Devices applet. Last edited by suneel on Fri May 01, 2009 12:36 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Tried this today on a system with integrated Realtek HD Audio, and I'm afraid to report this actually made things worse, even though this tip seems very logical, but I did come up with an interesting tip for all who use integrated audio with ASIO4All drivers. Whatever you do, make sure Hardware Buffer is OFF!!!! :hihi: Worked excellent after that, even with processor scheduling set to "Programs". Projects where crackling noises came up at about 30-40% now could easily push 70% with absolutelly no hickups. SoundCloud ::: Facebook
QuadCore Blissssssssssssssss (core i7 920)the tips posted where for ASIO only and not for ASIO4All.
ASIO4All uses WDM Kernel-Streaming, over existing WDM audio support and is hardware independent, whereas ASIO bypasses the Kernel Audio Mixer , the WDM part completely and talks directly to the audio hardware
QuadCore Blissssssssssssssss (core i7 920)Thanks for the clarification, but at least one good thing came out of it :hihi:

QuadCore Blissssssssssssssss (core i7 920)I can't imagine ever needing a quad-core in this lifetime. Since upgrading my laptop to a much more professional spec, instead of the gamer's spec of my old one, everything is flying and my CPU usage rarely peaks at more than 50% on my dual 2.4 at much mower latency than I used to work from.
I'd love to hear something that actually requires four CPUs to run, I don't think anything in my 1000+ CD collection would, if I tried to recreate it in Orion. I'm reasonably confident I could recreate a full orchestral score with my current set-up without putting any strain on anything. QuadCore Blissssssssssssssss (core i7 920)what abt for your max rendering work, or do you only do short renders? you may be right there wrt to your style of music and perhaps in general music too. in my case for my audio needs my 3.4 yr old athlon was hitting the wall more frequently so i decided to get one. and if your going to get a new pc today i guess you would pick a quad. anyways that was for my audio needs. for my work i will be assembling a dual socket system sometime this year and yes all the eight cores will be running at 100% Last edited by suneel on Sat May 02, 2009 1:22 am, edited 1 time in total.

Neighbors are fantastic. But I do not want to push it too far. Especially, as I like to work at night times.
QuadCore Blissssssssssssssss (core i7 920)Congratz on your new equipment. I got a new dual core laptop recently and I was blown away by it's performance. I can only imagine how the I7 would perform.

Rendering usually happens at more than twice real-time so I don't see any problems there at all, especially when compared to rendering video or 3D, which is many times slower than real-time [10-100 times slower or more].
If anything, the kind of music I am into should require a whole lot more than the vast majority of wimpy-dick stuff out there. I think it is far more about working efficiently, instead of just throwing more and more stuff into an arrangement with no plan or review or anything. With merging on the horizon, it's likely efficient workflows will be more important than ever. Dell G7 (Hexa-Core i7)|Cubase Pro 10||Analog Keys|Ultranova|MicroMonsta|Uno|Skulpt|Craft Synth 2.0|
