Is 'Goth' still big?Moderators: Christophe, Mark Is 'Goth' still big?Fooling with this tune as a possible soundtrack idea, and it kinda morphed into this Depeche Mode NIN thing. But it sounds really 'gothic' to me for some reason? I know it's WAY off the mark for this upcoming project. But if it's 'goth', I might file it away for that rainy day.
Dark Child Autoharps and whammy bars. Always sounds so creepy to me. :schock:
Is 'Goth' still big?I liked it, but I'm not sure that it's dark enough or frantic enough for Goth. Dark Pop? ... Dark Hop (It's definitely hip hop with the right bass line put in) ... maybe Goth lite? Hmmm, it's kind of hard to categorize. Then again, once again I wonder if I'm really hearing what's there with very low quality headphones and speakers. I will make it a point to get some decent monitor speakers soon. Listening to some of your other music I find that you make your own categories ... lo-fi ninja funk ... <cough>. Keep on being original
Is 'Goth' still big? Thanks omac. Yes, it's far from being 'Bauhaus' or 'Marilyn Manson' (are they considered Goth even?) But yes, 'goth lite' seems an appropriate catagory for it. I'm so out of whack with whats' 'Emo' and 'Idm' and 'Goth' these days. 17 Year olds listening to old Cure CD's wearing black lipstick to some 38 year old with eyeliner buying Marilyn Mansons latest MP3 - I'm so lost!
Is 'Goth' still big?I like the mood of the tune but it's waaaaay too clean sounding to be goth.
put everything through a cheap guitar stompbox, track by track, sample and remix, that would be more like it! speaking of old cure CDs, i was just listening to 'the top' from 1984 yesterday.. whenever i listen to anyone's orion demos i am struck by how clean and polished they sound, i can't get that sound myself, although it's maybe because i do spend all my time trying to dirty it all up! try this one for a modern gothic tune - i think it;s the darkest sounding song i ever did: http://www.harddisco.co.uk/mp3/punishment/normal.mp3

*Sigh* Bauhaus... To my mind they are the archetypal goth band. Oh, and Deine Lakaien too. Mustn't forget Deine Lakeian... You know, it really reminds me of someone. If you had the guy from Suspiria singing over it, that would definitely class as darkwave. So much of Gawth comes from the vocals... The fact that you've got a few more consonant intervals that the average Goth track won't make it fall out of the genre. The weird twittering on the top of the drumlines sounds like clockwork. Very steampunk'd... Nice one
Is 'Goth' still big?The music is very good... But to me it sounds a bit too clean to be Gothic. Goth, in my mind, is kinda like Metal on a heavy dose of minor chord sequences for that doom and gloom feeling. Yes, the vocals help to give it that weight.
Hmmm, would you class Depeche Mode as Gothic? But there again, I think Gothic encompasses many different styles filed under 'Alternative'. It's about dress sense... The music is eclectic... I mean, you can even class Sigue Sigue Sputnik as Gothic! Looking forward to listening to more of your stuff!
Is 'Goth' still big? Thanks folks. Glad there's positive vibes from the dark chords at least. But interesting to see no real definition of 'Goth' yet? I hear what you're saying HardDisco, and BTW - great track! But see, that's what I thought was 'industrial' like NIN or 'medival metal' like The Tea Party. I've been there and done that with Demon Gap And it drove me nuts - all this 'brooding ominous music all the time. But Jen and others were so into it?
But I definately agree with Dogsolitude and RobotSynapse, it's the vocals and lyrics that seem to define 'goth' mainly. And I would say Depeche Mode has been definately getting 'goth' lately in their style and music... But like my tune, it isn't 'really goth' ('Faux Goth' perhaps? ) Don't know about you folks, but I always feel I'm 'borrowing a fashion line' soon as these dark progressions and menacing beats come into play. Jen thought I was brilliant at it, and she definately 'lived the part'. Bones is great 'living the part' with Novakill too - and there I can see he wants to rile the audience and get them dancing. But 'goth' always seems so debilitating and depressing? Blues Of The New Millenium perhaps? I only wear it for Halloween, and I'm a few months early it seems.

Yeah, Goth seems to draw from loads of different genres and styles. I mean, there's the mediaeval stuff like Sopor Aeturnus, electronica from Deine Lakaien and Diary of Dreams, guitarry, metally... Not yet heard a Goth Brass Band though. I'm a big fan of Depeche Mode, and lots of Goths like them, but I wouldn't have really classed Depeche Mode as Gothic as such, though they certainly explore some murky avenues!
Is 'Goth' still big?And Dave Gahan is supposedly 'okay' now? Guess he's using Depeche as his 'therapy', which is good for him. But man, that guys got some demons in his closet!
But say for a band like Joy Division, they should be bigger than Bauhaus - with songs like Dead Souls, Ceremony, Love WIll Tear Us Apart, etc. But they're always considered 'New Romance' still? But then South Park shows these 'goth kids' shuffling around to what sounds like 'Modern English', and get offended when Stan calls them 'Emo's' Not to sound like Vinnie Barbarino but; "I'm so confused!"
Is 'Goth' still big?Depeche Mode are hard electronica, synth pop with an industrial edge rather than gothic, that's why their singles always charted better in Germany than in the UK!
I think a lot of bands have been labelled as gothic but only a few were consciously so, and those had singers who deliberately went for the wobbly deep baritone vocals. IE Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, and (more obscurely) Nosferatu. The wierd thing is that Andrew Eldritch (from the Sisters of Mercy) always denied being gothic! Bands like the Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cocteau Twins, had the Goth image in their early days but were a little more individual with their sound and progressed their own musical styles as their careers developed. To be stereotypical 80s Goth, you need these things: 1. A Drum Machine 2. A gravelly baritone voice 3. Bass guitar effected with 'Rat' distortion pedal (get a software version with Line 6 Pod Studio!!) 4. Guitars alternatively distorted or heavily chorused, or both. 5. Lyrics featuring various religious cliches: e.g: 'The Devil in a black dress watches over, my guardian angel walks away' (from Temple of Love by the Sisters of Mercy) 6. Occasional references to vampirism (Bela Lugosi's Dead - Bauhaus) 7. More minor chords than all the pop songs released in that year put together 8. Crimped backcombed hair with lots of hairspray 9. Crusty black clothes and make up 10. Amphetamines! Maybe I'll get a job with the NME yet - I feel quite proud of that lot! Is 'Goth' still big?Yeah, it's always about the vampires isn't it? I threw some stuff up at Vampirefreaks.com awhile ago... The furtherest things from what I would ever consider 'goth', just to get a rise. They play it, but don't complain? Maybe it's the effects of the pills?
Is this the NME? I thought this was the UK? (I was a Record Mirror bloke me self. )
Is 'Goth' still big?I have to admit, this was me 20 years ago...
Is 'Goth' still big?Fucking hell Steven, are you Alan Wilder in disguise?
Is 'Goth' still big?
Hmmm... I like Depeche Mode's old stuff... I can't get into what they are doing lately... To me it sounds pretty much the same... Dave Gahn has a certain vocal comfort zone that deadens what they do. I can see why Goths would like them as Depeche Mode contain the themes that seem to preoccupy Goths: Sex + Religion / Loss of Faith + Death. I love the Cocteau Twins though! Their music is timeless to my ears... I think they hated being labelled Gothic. Cocteau Twins But to answer your question... Gothic is still big! As long as there's music dealing with the darker side of life then it'll never go away.
Is 'Goth' still big?Harddisco my man - now that takes some serious balls to show a picture like that. If there ever was a pin up for 'Gothmopolitan', you'd be it!
Mark - I have taken off my mask, and where is the Batman? I'll tell you where he is - he's at home washing his tights! But seriously, I guess I better Google Alan Wilder. Cocteau Twins, I liked them up until I heard she never writes any lyrics down? She makes it all up on the spot? Either she's bloody brilliant, or really friggin lazy. Beautiful voice though, and I can she why she was held onto. Love that 'Heaven Or Las Vegas' of theirs, but certainly would've never imagined them being 'goth'? Now His Name Is Alive - those are some freaky songs I would consider 'goth'. But they're probably nowhere near that realm?
