OK, all you synth/sequencing experts will probably think this is a naive and silly question, but I'm really a hard rock/prog rock guy and my favorite sound generator (apart from guitars) is an old Roland module with an "Ultimate Keys" expansion card (loads of hammond tonewheels and mellotrons)
But I also love Tangerine Dream, Ashra - you know, Berlin School stuff and I want to try to do something like that for fun in Orion. So my question is simply: How are those bass and rhythmic sequences made? Do they sequence every single note? Do they use an arpeggiator? Is it a combination of sequenced notes and effects(delay?)
Is there a right way or a wrong way to do it?
I have no clue so anything that will point me in the right direction will be appreciated
Erik

How can I sound like those "Berlin School" bands?I'd start by downloading some midi files for the bands you like (if you can find them online). Then import the midi file(s) into Orion and deconstruct it. Loop a section, zoom in to the notes and look carefully. Play around with note placement etc. Then try and reconstruct it or something similar using Orion.
I found a Tangerine Dream site here: http://www.tadream.net/midi.htm Haven't listened to or downloaded them so can't vouch for their quality. Cheers, Mark
How can I sound like those "Berlin School" bands?Pretty well the 'retro synths' VST's are pretty faithful to the gear TD and Kraftwerk et al used. And yes, it was pretty well a lot of arpeggiators. Some of the old synths had very rustic 'step sequencers'. This is easily acheived with OP's own Pattern generators by simply 'plotting' random or choreographed notes tightly for 16 or 32 bars.
As Mark says, read up on the bands and the gear they used. You can probably get close proximities by OP's Wasp and other synths. OR - you can certainly buy a Aurturia ARP2600 or MiniMoog if you REALLY want that exact sound and style. They're worth the investment.
How can I sound like those "Berlin School" bands? Thanks guys. Some useful tips there - I appreciate it

How can I sound like those "Berlin School" bands?Hmmmm... It's kinda like photocopying music.... It's a strange concept... We've got all those beautiful (and mostly) free soft synths and some of us want to reproduce the sounds of others... Hmmmm...

How can I sound like those "Berlin School" bands?Hey, I went out to play Neil Sedaka - and wound up sounding like Aphex Twin. Helstor may be the one with the NEW sound in his ventures.
How can I sound like those "Berlin School" bands?Everything is possible with the Orion.
A couple of years ago I made a sample song based on the KraftBeat drum style of Orion. It's more Düsseldorf School stuff but it shows that you can get cool sounds out from Orion. It's pure Orion stuff (plus a couple of computer speech samples in the sampler) Just a demo. http://www.mikseri.net/artists/?id=113412&displ_lang=en ---> Kraft Style Demo Sample (mp3) If someone is interested in the sfs source of the song sample, I can share it.
How can I sound like those "Berlin School" bands?I liked that Kraft Style Demo! Cool!
How can I sound like those "Berlin School" bands?Hey, thanks RobotSYNAPSE!!
Here is the sfs source: http://koti.mbnet.fi/baroque/demoroom/K ... mental.rar It's made with Orion 7.62. Last edited by baroquerion on Mon Aug 03, 2009 11:20 am, edited 1 time in total.
