Hi all,
I've dipped my toes in to the wonderful world of plug-in design (using SynthMaker 2). I've actually been meddling with it for quite a while. Anyway, recently I had an idea for an effect and this is what I want to present to you now.

It's basically a saturation/distortion effect with a few additions to help waveshaping and sound design.
First off is a knob called offset. This introduces DC offset in to the incoming signal to assymettrize the waveform. This can greatly affect the harmonics that are generated by the saturation and distortion modules downstream. Not all settings for this are good, but there certainly are some sweet spots. Next knob controls the amount of fold-back distortion followed by a saturation knob, a hard clipping knob and a feedback knob with variable delay to give static flanger-type effects. Finally there are high and low pass cut off knobs for further shaping of your sound. The feedback path starts after the filters and is reintroduced to the signal via the fold back distortion module. The minimum delay for this is one sample, the maximum 500 samples. Note that there is an effect bypass switch in the top right hand corner.
A note of warning, if any of the distortion parts are set to a high level then even small levels of feedback can drive self-oscillation. This can be used for creative effects and won't blow your speakers since the output is limited.
Note that the plugin behaves differently on the main mixer strips when compared with the busses and master strip. This is due to the different signal levels at these points in Orion (the signal on the main mixer strip is hotter and so drives the plugin more).
I've included 8 presets that were made using Monobass as signal source, so I suggest any one of the styles (or your own pattern) in Monobass as a good starting point to test the plugin - try it as a main insert and as a Master channel insert to hear the difference.
It's not completely finished yet, I'm trying to decide whether to have input and output gain knobs as well as a wet/dry knob and more preset slots.
Anyway, let me know what you think especially wrt the additional features I'm thinking about. Any other ideas you have are, of course, appreciated too.
Here is a screenshot next to a Monobass so you get an idea of it's size (not very big).
Hope you like it!
Cheers,
Mark

Re: My first VST effect available for zilchI forgot to add, that this isn't just some stock modules cobbled together. I coded everything apart from the filters myself using Synthmaker's code module. I might even have a go at designing my own filters. The filters are 8-pole and there is 2x oversampling throughout so should be minimal aliasing (if any). Maybe I could add a switch to turn oversampling off for those that do want it a bit more gritty

Re: My first VST effect available for zilchhey...
just having a quick fiddle now.... on one of my fav WASP sounds and I LOVE IT!.... I can see (hear) me using this quite a bit!!! nice one! I'm off to play some more cheers "I am the all-singing all-dancing crap of the world."
Re: My first VST effect available for zilch
excellent and awesome ! would you be able to code and design some vintage roland filter ? Yamaha CS-30, Roland SH-1, Roland MKS70, Focusrite Scarlett 18i6, Yamaha FS1R, Oberheim Matrix 1000, Novation Remote 37SL, Korg Legacy, Alesis M1Active 520, Novation Launchpad Pro, Push2, Intel i7-7700HQ
Re: My first VST effect available for zilchThanks for trying it everyone. Glad you like it.
STIFFY, I actually thought of you and BONES whilst I was putting this together. I figured it would be right up your street. It works really well with a lot of sources not just Monobass and WASP. It's great for percussive sounds - you can get some really good industrial sounds from those, I've also stuck my guitar through it with good results. Maybe you could persuade BONES to shout angry things through it Christophe, I have no real idea how to go about coding a specific filter, although I know the basics for a bog standard one. I guess you're wanting your SH1 or MKS70 modelled (when did you get the MKS70, BTW?). I'd probably need some sounds from you at different cutoffs/resonances I guess. Maybe even frequency sweeps for each filter setting. Then I'd have a stab at mathematically modelling in Mathematica before transferring that code to Synthmaker. Why don't you send me a filter cutoff sweep with the resonance and EG turned down and I'll see if I get anywhere with that first?
Re: My first VST effect available for zilchlooks interesting Mark, does SM2 export as 64 bit?

Re: My first VST effect available for zilchOooh, this seems like it'd be my cup of tea. Going to play with it after work today. Thanks, Mark! If this does what I think it does, it might be just the silver bullet my new project is looking for.

Re: My first VST effect available for zilch
Not that I'm aware of. I'll check if it's in the pipe-line though.
Re: My first VST effect available for zilch
I hope it is what you need. Looking forward to hearing what you think.
Re: My first VST effect available for zilch - UPDATED 31/03Updated to version 0.981.
New version adds a resonance control for the HPF. Try settings of 0.25 for HPF (cutoff) and 0.35 for H-REZ (resonance). Resonance for the LPF doesn't do anything particularly nice to the sound in this context so I've left it out. Also added a final gain control mostly for reducing the signal out if required. It can also be used to boost the signal with some clipping (less than the clip control though). Since this lies after the feedback circuit it won't induce self oscillation unlike the clip control when pushed too high with feedback circuit active. Re: My first VST effect available for zilch - UPDATED 31/03moving some of the knobs just a small amount gives me a wall of noise/stuck sound....bypassing on the gui, then un-bypassing resumes the noise...seems a bit touchy to me, have to be very careful what you do with it
the presets sound cool, and when it wasnt sounding like a wailing alien it had some good effects on drum patterns Windows 11 Home - 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-12400 2.50 GHz -32GB RAM

Re: My first VST effect available for zilch - UPDATED 31/03
That's the feedback that I mentioned and is a feature. You'll get a feeling for where you can and can't go if you do or don't want that sound, e.g., if none of the distortion modules are engaged you can go quite high with the feedback, whereas if any of them are above 2ish tehn I wouldn't go much higher than 0.03 on the feedback. I can drop it if people want. Also, note that there is some zipping noise on the delay. This is now fixed. I'll upload when I get home from work. Anyway, thanks for trying it out. Yes it is good on drums. I bet you already worked out that the fold back distortion is particularly good on bass drum sounds. Maybe I can do some distortion level based correction for the feedback o stop the self-oscillation. The feedback is needed for the delay based metal sound/static flange.
Re: My first VST effect available for zilch - 2nd UPDATE 31/Second update of the day. Found a denormal issue in the oversampling code. Now fixed. Also, added a dry/wet control for those that don't like to go all the way
