What makes that more techno than Pump Up The Volume, which appeared two years earlier?

Techno started in Detroit around 1982, depending on which record you consider "ground zero" (I like "Clear" by Cybotron, others call it "Shari Vari" by A Number of Names, but to me that's a disco/italo record). The name didn't stick until about 1987, which is around the time records started making it out of the US.

The original sound was hugely influenced by Kraftwerk, but equally as much by funk and afrofuturism. In other parts of the world techno kind of turned into a catch-all categorization, but I only really apply it to stuff descended from those early Detroit guys.

This was the theme song for the Entitled Opinions podcast for it's first few years, and I just get stoked
whenever I hear it now, thanks to that program. Oh, wait - here's a link!

But that's a lot like saying "best disease I've caught in years".

Believe it or not, Men Without Hats have a brand new album and, believe it or not, it is awesome. Its produced by Dave "Rave" Ogilvie, of Skinny Puppy production fame (not related to Nivek Ogre, their front-man), and pretty much every song is as good as anything they have ever done. Back in the day I'd have said Safety Dance was far and away their best song but not in the face of this. The really amazing thing is that it basically sounds exactly like they always did, only moreso. Modern production has made the sound much fuller and all but a couple of slower songs could easily pack dancefloors anywhere. Its called Love In The Age Of War and it is the best pop music you will hear this year.
