There are GOOD quality GM SoundFonts for reasonable money - they blow the doors off most of the old "Casio-style" GM sound engines. Or go for a more general set of SoundFonts.
Can't help with the XG stuff...
Respect.

How to use MIDI Files in Orion?MU128 is AWESOME! If you get a chance, snag it! Not only do you get great GM/XG sounds, but PLG and Performance mode and A/D inputs to boot. Performance allows you to combine up to 4 AWM voices to play simulataneously and/or zone however you like. PLG - well you get some awesome VL and AN cards, but a cool one ofr the MU128 is the Harmonizer. Not only does it do wacky things to your mic input - but also turns the MU into a decent vocoder!
The SW1000 is a good card still, but I think the MU's are best as a all around 'outboard' source. Just pissed Yamaha doesn't support TG/USB connection anymore. That's why I hold onto my UW500 like gold now. It's the only direct bridge between modelling and XG control these days.

How to use MIDI Files in Orion?Roland's are good too (better basses by far.) But I don't think they ever 'went beyond' like Yamaha did with cheesy rave and house sounds above the GM spec. Roland just stuck by it's GS/GM standard, and has been happy since. Roland is trusty and faithful, but lacks flash and splash in amount and management.
How to use MIDI Files in Orion?midi effects support for Orion!!!
