Note a cure-all by any means, but it's an easy trick that's come in handy a lot this mopnth:
Clean up your beats! Drums are generally the drive behind your song; sucky drums usually = sucky track. Start by tuning them to match the key of your song. When you feel like everything's tuned correctly and you've got your patterns laid out, it's time to clean them up so they don't add mud to the mix. One way to get a head start (not a substitute for EQing) is to use the Dynamics Shaper to add punch where you want it, or, even easier, stick a Platinum Gate on one of your drums' inserts. Drop the threshold and play with the release a little. The quicker decay on each hit helps tame bass drums, snares and claps, and helps perk up hats.

Cleaning up drumsWhy use a gate when you can simply adjust the decay in DrumRack?

Cleaning up drumsWouldn't work for chopped loops in the sampler, and not easily for some percussion VSTs. Particularly in the sampler - if your loop has any reverb, this can mask it pretty effectively.

Cleaning up drumsgood tip with the gate - the dynamics shaper is a great tool, I find myself using it more and more.

If you heavy compress them threw a buss then the compressor can add some unwanted decay, with a shaper or gate you bring the signal back to normal with the nice feeling of the compressor. Emu1212m | Alesis micron | Edirol pcr500 | FOCAL CMS 50 | Senheiser hd 25-1 II | Core i7 etc
Cleaning up drumsThat sounds like a lot of work, why not just use decent sounds that work out of the box? Seriously, it seems really strange that anyone would go to that kind of trouble when it's so easy to have the right sound from the get-go. At the very least you can sort it all out in an audio editor as a pre-process.
