Hi all,
maybe the majority of you know this little app, but maybe for some it's new, a useful little tool with which you can organize your folders pretty fast. Say you want to find your various Orion-folders fast, you just right-click and find "folder guide", where you can customize the most often used folders and move things around there or find the 132*132bmp fast that you want to see when loading up your song properties in Orion.
The link is HERE, and personally since we got the windows-habit of having the preset and song folder at the c-drive, I use this one all of the time. Makes working faster, at least for some. Free, of course.

folder guide for finding or managing your - folders^^Thanks Klemprer! It'd be faster if we just had a default option in OP, which should've been there along with this My Documents crap. HOPEFULLY it will be implemented in OP8 - but then one has to pay for OP8, and yours is free. Go figure.
More tools for simplicities sake.
folder guide for finding or managing your - folders^^Neither My Documents or Orion have to be on C
And as for My Documents+Orion stuff, I think it's more like a lesser of two evils. SoundCloud ::: Facebook
folder guide for finding or managing your - folders^^But to not give users the preference with a simple statement and option saying 'Orion will now default to C:/My Documents/Synapse to be more in line with Microsoft and other software applications. If one does not care to subscribe to this newer method, please go Preferences/Default Preset Path and Browse for a drive and/or location more convienient to your needs.'
Default Song Path, Default Wave Editor Path, DXi/VST Preset system, Preview Options, Auto Back Up Preferences... But to where you used to have your VST and DX presets for oh so many years - well screw you Charlie and get hip to the new regime!
folder guide for finding or managing your - folders^^I understand the "I'm used for presets to be there" part, I really do. But what I don't understand is what's the big deal about it.
It's not hard to navigate to "My Documents -> Synapse Audio -> Orion -> Presets -> (Plugin) Generator" to put presets in there... it's basically 2 clicks and 3 double-clicks to get to presets, against 1 click and 5 double-clicks, possibly even more, to get to Program Files... both if you're doing from the "Start". I don't really see it as a big effect on anyone. Besides, if you keep important stuff in your "My Documents" folder, beside what the "new regime" dictates, then My Documents shouldn't even be on C. So.... a little tip... for those who care about their stuff, scared that they might go away if they forget to move them from C partition during Windows' Setup format process.... or something Convenient little thingy. folder guide for finding or managing your - folders^^i didnt know of this move feature.....
anyways what i think users want is separation of orion and my documents. for me mydocs is like a store room in the house. its a boring room where no one wants to go and keep only junk stuff. yeah sort of like that. Last edited by suneel on Sun Jul 12, 2009 5:30 am, edited 1 time in total.
folder guide for finding or managing your - folders^^The biggest irk for me is all VSTi's old, updated or new will go to the new path on Preset Load or Save. And bad enough if it was just My Doc/Synapse/Presets. But also goes beyond to Plugins/xxx Synth. Meanwhile one may have just loaded or saved directly from an established C:/Progam Files/Orion/Presets path for another VST.
So like Suneel says - even though you may work in the basement, the front door closet is getting filed with useless empty file folders. And you're constanly running up and down the stairs to make sure everythings safely in the basement with you. Or in Hypna's case - the upstairs sun deck. 99% of software allows for path allocation on install - though it may default to My Documents if one allows it too. And a large majority of software allow for Path Preference after install. Or like OP's Sampler after moving Audio to a specific folder, allow for search, scan and lock with Save. Though the freebie aids and XP tips is nice, a half witted musician shouldn't have to be concerned with them just to load and/or save their new preset on Crystal or amend that old .FXB still down in Program Files. These help reduce the strain and confusion, but bottom line - shouldn't have to at all if OP had the proper amenities to begin with. And now you know where my "My Documents" folder is :hihi: It's been there since Win98 and a "little" misshap I had with it. Anyway, if it's a separation that's in question, then there should also be a separation from "Program Files", since that was the reason for the location change in the first place, if I remember (that Vista's file security thingy many don't know how to turn off... or something)
Steven, I don't think the paths had changed that drastically. I think the "Plugins->xxxSynth" was already there, it's just the entire Presets folder was moved to My Documents, so that's all there is to do... move/copy entire Presets folder to My Documents.
rofl!!! That sounds like I'm a cockroach working in some damp and dark place, between two bricks on the eastern wall, three rows above the floor.
It's the same thing. What is really so different between My Documents and Program Files? Just the name, for what I can see, and I've grown to hate both of them. But in this specific case, all there is to do is to copy/move presets to My Documents, Orion does the rest for you. When you click on Load button, it will open the instrument's preset folder. Same is with Save. It's not even a matter of organizing anymore, since all of it is more or less on autopilot, everything is already set for you. The only time I can see where one would need to navigate to the specific preset folder is when copying new ones. So why is navigating to My Documents that hard? Don't get me wrong, I tend to keep my stuff far away from any of Windows' folders. The only things I keep in Program Files are those that don't change. Which is why you won't find Orion there on my computer... or My Documents, since stuff are placed there, whether we like it or not, and not just by Orion. I can't say I'm really affected by this placement in My Documents, it really doesn't make any difference. If Rich finds the time, will and a way to make selectable paths for Presets, I'm moving them out of My Documents, and back into the Orion's folder on D, where it was. But till then, it's just a minor, and I mean minor like really tiny, adjustment of where stuff is. Nothing else. SoundCloud ::: Facebook

Surely this is all being resolved with the release of v8,no?
folder guide for finding or managing your - folders^^I wou;d hope so Opi. I don't mind OP going to this My Documents thing, and for some it makes perfect sense and without much detriment to their work flow. For me, I got loose .FXP's, .FXB's, folders all within C:/Program Files/Orion/Presets. Maybe not the ideal working conditions for some, maybe not enough for others? But it's the way I've come accustomed to working, loading, making and managing sounds for many years with OP. And yes, I could just cut and paste everything to My Documents/Synapse/Presets and be done with it. But say in the case of making patches for Ultran - I'm going to have to be in C:/Program Files/Orion anyways to select Samples, and alter .TXT. So is nice to quickly pop out of Samples folder, into Presets/Ultran and see if I already have a patch similar to what I'm after, or does this other bank or patch use the same samples and .txt already. All from within that one cumulative Orion folder. It's nice, and I like working that way. My Documents/Presets/Ultran and Samples/.TXT paths tend to make Ultran just a 'rompler' then without much room for creation and exploration.
BTW - for those that didn't know, you can open a .PRS with Wordpad and see what .TXT Ultran is using for that current patch. You can easily select another .TXT off the established C:/Program Files/Orion/Samples path. But if you physically want to change the .TXT to try a different WAV. you'll manually have to go there via Explorer. As it stands now, I have 2 Ultran Preset folders - one I can refer to quickly in C:/Program Files/Orion - and one that Ultran utilises by imposed default via My Documents. That's why I dislike the static and inflexible My Documents path so.
