Hi guys!
I have an old vocal sample I wanted to use in the newest song I'm working on. I've since decided to use another, but I'd like to clean up the other to use, because it's pretty cool. However, it's from a live speach from the 50's or 60's, and very very very dirty. Do you guys have any tips on how to clean it up? Or on the flip-side, how to make it sound totally retro so that the dirt will add color to the track?
I tried both, and can't seem to get it right. The noise reduction in Orion, doesn't seem to do much good in this case. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

how to clean up old vocal sample?TRy Audacity, the free audio editor, with noise removal function. BAsically you highlight the noise part of the wav ( background hissing ) then it takes only that from the sample away. It can change the sound some what of the sample, so just try it a little see what it does. Also consider cutting just the vocals , either in editor or grooveslicer. Finally if you go the deliberate lo-fi route, what about 2 band distortion really mess it up?
how to clean up old vocal sample?I think there's some free DeNoise/Click plug ins too if you look around KVR, or grab a copy of Computer Music mag. Pretty good software comes on their DVD monthly, and have a standard CM Studio that's always included. Me - I get right down in WaveLab and redraw the dang samples to get rid of pops and clicks. (I hates 'em I tells ya! )
Bringing back Jack for another 'road trip'? Nice.
how to clean up old vocal sample?the new standard is izotope RX. I nevertried it but if you can pay 400€ it could do the job...

how to clean up old vocal sample? To give the old souding touch there is the idea to capture sounds characteristics between the cleaned version and the raw version with Voxengo deconvolver.
Another one would be to use a plugin such as Izotope Vinyl. About the cleaning process, there are a load of plugins: Voxengo, WaveArt etc. The problem is that an old recording will probably have a reduced bandwidth which is something you couldn't change.

One can get good with their audio editor, and it's relatively easy. Soon as you hear a click or pop in the WAV as it plays try to stop it as near as you can. Zooming in tight on the sample may show an uneven line, or a very sharp peak or valley. I'm spoilt with Wavelab, as all I have to do is highlight the portion and WaveLab redraws it very accurately. But I'm sure with just a pencil tool, it could be done just as quick.

God I remember doing that years ago on Amiga, I used to draw whole wave forms lol
how to clean up old vocal sample? For 'clicks and pops', it's still my trusted way. I've got the plug's that can do it, and they're good at times. But it's just as fast for me to zero in on 'there, there, and there' as loading a plug and rendering only to remove 1 and a half out of 3.
And folks are still drawing single cycle waveforms as well I'm sure.
how to clean up old vocal sample?depending on the track EQing should already do the trick. An example of the track and the sample would be helpful.
how to clean up old vocal sample?thanks for the response guys. Of course, the bandwith issue can't be changed. The sample is from a live speech from like the 50's or something. The main problem is the static. The bandwith is lower, but that's ok. It's going to sound old, but that's part of the feeling of it in a way.
So the idea was either to clean it up, or work with the fuzz. I don't really need to post the exact file, I was just looking for some advice on methods used to clean tracks up. I know that some people have certain techniques they use to go about this sort of thing. So I just wondered what things I could consider doing, since the remove noise plug doesn't seem to do much.
how to clean up old vocal sample?i just mess with EQ to see what sounds best when i cut/boost certain freqs..i use one that has use definable ranges so i can do 'surgical eq'

how to clean up old vocal sample?Or the other trick Icaro, when life gives you lemons... hurl them back hard so they splat really good. Meaning - go vicious with your sample if you can. Put him through a megaphone effect, a rotary speaker, a AM radio effect, or all of the above. Depending on what you got and how it's to be portrayed. Jack definately had a variety of poems and tangents. Steve Allen backed him pretty good on the piano at times.
But if you can emphasize lines and emotions with jarring effects, you become the modern Steve Allen then.
