I think the EKS-9 is one of the best vsts for creating kicks now, but that's my own biased opinion.
Personally, I use a lot of samples as well (though not from other songs), and most are now comming from a Wave Alchemy collection:
http://www.wavealchemy.co.uk/electro_collection/pid56
I also use it for a lot of other percussion when I don't use Synapse stuff.
As far as sampling from songs..... well, that would be totally correct about there already being compression mastering etc. on them......... but I think you'd be safe knowing that's the case, and when not to process already processed kicks. If you stick a kick in a track that's already been beefed up, and then put it through another round in the microwave, then your track will probably sound like an overcooked TV dinner. I find a lot of times I don't even need to do much for the Wave Alchemy samples to sound right either.

Pressure on the Bass Drum BDI'm surprised a lot of people don't go back to the art of sampling. Just hitting a plastic milk jug or water bottle with a mic at the mouth, and pitching it down aferwards and and messing with the filters. One of the best kicks I ever got was from a Snapple cap. Pitching that down -24 or so made it this sweet big metalic/plastic-y skin.
