I hear you about the pads MW. Roland's incorporated the SP808 style on its Fantom keyboards, and the Zoom HD16 also has the Roland/Akai pads for numerous triggering and applications. But there are already a lot of freebie drum racks with that look as well that work great in Orion. CM's SR-202, the RM4 and I'm sure countless others. So the pad issue I'm not sure OP needs to incorporate, especially when most of us use keyboards and QWERTY interfaces as it is with Orion? But the look of that MOTU certainly brings back memories for me at least.
But if it's phrase sample mangling you're after - nothing gets much better than the Smart stuff. A bit irksome to use for sure, but worth the effort.

New SamplerThis is probably the best demonstration of what 16 pads and 3 Audio tracks on the Roland SP-808 can do. The other nice thing about the SP808 was automated faders for each track as well. And keep in mind, this song is only 3 tracks. (One of the SP808's downfalls is 4th track is essentially a compositing clipboard)
Take The Ride Severe PITA to cut and work with in a little LCD screen. But with a little finese from Rich perhaps, the same thing could be acheiveable in Orions Audio Track? As for Samplers and DR - I shudder to think doing a song like this with them.
