I'll try and explain Song Merge as I meant it a little better -
I've got a ton of WIP files and sometimes want to put parts from several together at once. Currently, the only way do this is to open two (unstable) instances of Orion, cross my fingers, and copy/paste patterns one at a time (Copy All Patterns doesn't work for some reason.) Ick.
I'm proposing a new item under File->Import (fig. 1). Clicking it would bring up a window like the plain ol' Open File browser, but with different options (fig. 2). Choose a module from the drop-down, check off whatever applies, hit Open and selected module is copied into the open project.

This brings up another idea – imagine the Genetics feature with 2+ songfiles

Song Merge/Import request (illustrated)Sets up a timeline, which is more important for me than vague names of what a sound makes me think of. It's much easier to just remember "it was that one with the sweet glitchy bassline... that was somewhere in the 70s.." (I name 'em in the song info). This system's also made keeping all of a track's files in one folder mighty easy too - everything's prefixed with the song #.

Song Merge/Import request (illustrated)I prefer the idea of Merge to making it just another import option. Import - Export - Merge just make sense to me because with Import/export, you are dealing with other file formats, whereas with Merge it gives you the hint that it works with Orion files.
Anyhoo, here's my mock-up of a possible dialog: The first column is the channel label, as per the Playlist, and the second column tells you which instrument it refers to. As you see it, it would do the job of a track template but with all the options selected, it could do a whole lot more. Obviously, patterns would come in with pattern automation, regardless of the status of the "Automation" check-box, which would refer to song automation only. If you want to replace a generator, simply select it and choose a replacement. I've shown it as a drop-down but it could be done using the existing right-click Insert menu. Song Merge/Import request (illustrated)Okay, I see a bit now what you guys are getting at with song merge. But then you'd always have to go to that song and select those drums or whatever, right?
Whereas those same drums could be saved as a full snapshot Style, and always be there in the DR menu. One wouldn't have to search for Song, and all those procedures. Looks like a long way to go for a little bit of something to me still?

Song Merge/Import request (illustrated)Steven, what's the difference between looking for a style and looking for a song file? It's a rhetorical question because the simple answer is that you store all your styles in the same place. If you did the same with your template songs [if you chose to make them], it would be the same situation. I hate the idea of having to explicitly create a template or a style, it restricts you to only re-using things that yo have pre-ordained as being of further use and, to be honest, would be of no use to me whatsoever. With a system like this, you would get use from it, Teksonik would get use from it and I would get use from it. It addresses a range of different needs in one hit - surely that has to be a good thing, even if it's not your perfect solution?

Song Merge/Import request (illustrated)It also addresses a block in usage of Orion's own songfiles that can't and isn't currently addressed by other software.

Song Merge/Import request (illustrated)i think they are all stupid ideas, and you must all be stupid to use them.

Hence the need for both song merge and template functions. Song merge would be the function you use once a month on average, while templates is something you might use every other hour. Admin - Synapse Audio Software

Song Merge/Import request (illustrated)In fact Richard is right in whole way. If templates are just earlier saved sfs format then it is the same in this case. I would like to see templates in next version

Song Merge/Import request (illustrated)I agree with Bones and Krim, the whole idea of constantly using and lifting stuff from eleswhere - even ones own music, send shivers down my spine. If I'm making a song and say 'I wish I could bring that bass from that other song that didn't work out - it could fit perfect here' (which in about 8 years with Orion has happened twice at best...) That's where the MIDI Import, and now thankfully Styles come in. Maybe not the easiest - but again, I don't do it often.
But I liked Teksonik's idea if having at least a 'set up' on the mixer when one pulls up a Multi DR 'Grunge Kit' or something. Level's, EQ's, Effects on each channel. Just the difference between 'additive' and 'subtractive' then. Keep the EQ on the BD, but turn the sends down. Re-EQ the SD, but keep the 2 tap levels, turn down the HH's a little more, and so on. The possibilities for multi-out DR and Sampler set ups would be phenominal in this regard IMO. Styles would become a fully mixed and effected 'preset' then. Use 'as is', and/or tailor it to the song at hand. But, I also see the merits in digging for and extrapolating a specific track, channel strip, pattern, et al from an exisiting creation. Does make it nice for that 'must have' lifting into another song. But it comes down to 'sampling' at that point IMO. Sure, I'd like to sound exactly like James Brown in a certain song, and love that Sex Machine riff... Easy enough to sample it and stick it in, but I'd rather play 'like it', or 'sound like it' through some sweat and toil. The same would be for 'sampling' my own songs, good or bad - be it a bass riff, a gated synth channel, etc. It all can be done now on OP, if one puts there mind to it, MIDI Export/Import. Style, .SFS, Streaming... Not easy by any means, granted, And when Remixers, Mashers, jingle writers what have you already possess and/or know about hosts and suites that can do this merging already - and use or want to get them, legit or illegally... Is it really worth the time and effort for OP8? I still think a full mixer snapshot of a generators set up as a preset 'style' holds a hell of a lot more virtue than this 'song merge' stuff. And hopefuly Rich can still consider and intigrate it for OP8. I might be the only one using it - but for a x16 out Sampler with a fully mapped drumkit that's EQ'd, mixed, effected, and ready to play and/or already loaded with rythems to choose from, and just strap on the axe and go... Man, that would be sweet for me!
Song Merge/Import request (illustrated)
That's exactly what you can do with templates, add your fully EQ'd, mixed, effected and ready-to-play x16 out Sampler into your project. All it takes is a mouseclick to summon up the Insert menu and then another mouseclick to select the template you desire Admin - Synapse Audio Software
