Look at how any 3D or compositing application handles animation [which is the functional equivalent of automation] and you'll get a good idea of teh kinds of funtionality that would greatly improve Orion's automation. Th efirst and most obvious is a spline-based system. Once that is in there, a few simple tools could make it incredibly versatile -
- Simple math functions like scale, flip, smooth and randomise
- Out of range functions. The image should tell you all you need to know about this. Ideally, you could use different settings before and after if you wanted to.
- Copy/Paste vertices would allow you to re-use the animation easily. The system would need to be able to paste at the current time [cursor position], which seems to be something Orion cannot do anywhere at the moment, but surely that could be added easily enough? It would also work like copy/paste does now, if nothing is selected, it copies the whole spline, otherwise just the selected vertices.
- With splines it should be easy to see multiple curves at once. It might require a split-screen with a tree-view but that would make it pretty damned cool, I reckon.

Integrating this last feature with the existing automation might be a bit tricky [showing multiple blocky thingies] but I imagine it would be doable, just not that pretty to look at or work with.

Alternate Idea For Improved AutomationSeems like logic's automation.
I am all in for splines in playlist editor. Emu1212m | Alesis micron | Edirol pcr500 | FOCAL CMS 50 | Senheiser hd 25-1 II | Core i7 etc
Alternate Idea For Improved AutomationIt should also be possible to set new vertices by clicking somewhere on a spline/line (is spline=line?) and then go ahead with another function. Like clicking somewhere in the line of Relative Repeat, add at this position a vertice and then use the Linear line to fade out for example. Maybe that's what you meant by
And the user should be able to hide any automation window so that the playlist can be set back to what it looks like today. Otherwise, the playlist will be bloated to such an extend, that it covers to much of the screen. @Rich Did you also read the UNLINK ALL MIDI FROM HARDWARE feature on the whishlist? Would be great to have that. Last edited by DaZoid on Sat Jan 31, 2009 7:52 am, edited 1 time in total.
Alternate Idea For Improved Automationwhatever changes are made to automation, I would still really like to see a visual point of reference in the event editor for the current setting of non-automated parameters.
Alternate Idea For Improved AutomationI agree.. as it is, i have to record and wiggle the knob to find out what the setting is on the event editor.

Alternate Idea For Improved Automationlooks like a big mess i will never use....but hey, if you cant make music without it, it has to go in.

Alternate Idea For Improved Automation
I'd much prefer to keep it as a separate window, like it's always been. As I've said a few times already, I have found it works much better to keep the Playlist zoomed out and use it as a navigator, with the Event window zoomed in, for accurate automation.
No, I meant you could have LINEAR before the first vertex and RELATIVE REPEAT after the last, as opposed to the same extrapolation either side. As soon as you create a new vertex outside the current spline [yes, it is a line], you change the whole thing, so that it becomes part of what is repeated.
If you look at the bottom image, that is exactly what it does. Another clever thing, that only Combustion seems to do [that's where I made these screen-shots] is to automagically colour the lines and the parameters they belong to. So if you only select one parameter, it is always white no matter which parameter it is. The second is always light blue, etc. Dell G7 (Hexa-Core i7)|Cubase Pro 10||Analog Keys|Ultranova|MicroMonsta|Uno|Skulpt|Craft Synth 2.0|

Alternate Idea For Improved Automationi prefer Logics automation with pencil (last seconds in video):

LOL, Orion has pencil for automation. There's NOTHING special or interesting thing in those last seconds.
Alternate Idea For Improved AutomationIn 3D, linear automation means you get a linear automation while in audio, linear automation might already result in a spline-ish curve internally. A simple example is linear volume automation, in Orion (& many other apps, plugins) it'll never result in an actual linear sweep and for a good reason.
Since it's completely impossible to know internal mappings or behavior of the controls that are automated, splines don't accomplish the same thing as in 3D software, at all. Admin - Synapse Audio Software

Alternate Idea For Improved Automation
i can't do anything like this in Orion playlist. Keith Murray, Da Muzicianz, Ying Yang Twins, Big Omeezy Beat Maker.
Alternate Idea For Improved Automation
But you can in the Event Editor. Do you think your drawing can be precise on such a small Automation Track seen in the video? For worthy precise hand drawing full view is the best. And see above what Richard wrote. I can tell that in my simple way. Most of those fancy curves wich will look cool to your EYES, will suck when you'll hear what it does. Try to record your automation, and with those 'intelligent curves' which fit to the characteristics of the automated parameter sounding good to your EARS.
Alternate Idea For Improved Automationexactly since outcome of automation is random, you cant just interpolate or generate a parametric curve at f(t)x,y,z . however you can generate some with fixed control points, but thats pointless since it will be rigid.
Alternate Idea For Improved Automationi want automation, when you like in FL on every knob (whatever it is) click mouse right button and then create automation and in playlist i can see what i'm doing with automation.
