I use Wavelab. I have a feeling that the ms amount you see is directly related to the ms of look-ahead you set on the compressor. Anyway, it's my mistake for assuming that it would be the same kind of thing while loading a VST.
And yes, V/M, you're missing my particular logic...being that I wouldn't have to automate anything at all....for the sake of convenience. Does having an extra reverb on my vocal channel suck up processor even while not being used? You betchya. Does it take up an insert or send I'd much rather be giving to an effect that I'll be using the entire song instead of just one instance? You betchya. Would the option to load a VST into an "effect" channel temporarily be useful, creatively? I think it would, especially when it comes to affecting pre-rendered audio....I wouldn't have to be jumping into and out of Wavelab to get what I'm after all day, I wouldn't have to slot in Reverb A and automate it only to find I don't like that particular reverb on that particular phrase, thusly removing it and having to do it all over with Reverb B.
But I digress, as much as I would like something like this, it doesn't appear that it would be all that easy to implement and could possibly be cause programming/loading/memory issues as well as deviating from the way many people use Orion.
But I remain on the position that it would be suuuuupery dupery convenient....FOR ME!

another convenient idea
how would Orion know to do something only at a certain time if it was not automated?
another convenient ideaOkay. What I thought would happen is this. You would have a track, say, an audio track. Then you could designate a "follow" track to be associated with the audio track. In this follow track, over the course of the playlist editor you would be able to insert an effect at particular points in the song that would load only when the arrangement reached the designated area. You could have a graphical block representation or "object" that represented the VST, and you would be able to size this "block" as well as move it back and forth in the arrangement much like any other object. The VST would be completely confined to operating within the parameters you set for the "block"...so you have a VST, a reverb for example, and it is in the "follow" track which is solely designated to be used with the audio track (or whatever track you decided to designate it to) Within the follow track is a "block" which represents the VST. You resize the block according to how long you want the reverb to last and move the block to where you would want it, say, in relation to the end of a phrase on the audio track. (or you could have several blocks, all of which point to the same VST, over different parts of the audio track)
This way you could set, within a certain amount of bars, the amount of time the VST will be active. You could also do something like right click on the block to change the VST or whatever. But, like I said...I just really think this would be very hard to implement. But it would negate having to use any sort of automation at all since the VST would remain static. So, it's just a silly wish. Anyway, I thought it would be easier then automation because, while I do have the luxery of a controller, some people don't, and also a lot of people don't really understand the concept of automation or might just have little use for editing events and whatnot. Plus I thought it might save CPU as the VST would only load and unload at certain times instead of remaining in the chain the entire time and various other reasons. Yes my siggy has my addy. http://www.soundcloud.com/illi ...see what I do with Orion?
another convenient ideaAh. Assuming automation tracks can be used for events on the main mixer, that would take care of the playlist part of your request, as well as the end result. However, you'd still have to mess with automation and use up an insert.
You can still swap out effects without losing the automation on turning the insert on and off, if I recall correctly.. since that automation is on the channel strip and not the effect.
another convenient ideaAutomation Tracks can automate anything/everything on the Mixer as well as on the Master and control switching such as Insert slots on/off is really a breeze and can be done in like 15 seconds of your time.
