Amen Bones. I think the ONLY reason the 909 became popular was because there was so much great beat boxes that established themselves - primarily the 808 for the blossoming rap scene. But like you said, Linn and Oberheim and Emu became the studio favorites. And as much as Roland hoped '909' was going to be 101 times better than the '808' it flopped badly on them. I remember seeing 909's in pawnshops for $99 in the early 80's. But then the house scene came, and 909's just had that great kick sound and splashy HH that made it the staple right off the bat.
I don't think I ever liked a beat box 'out of the box' so to speak. Always want to ram it through a distortion or ring mod or something.
And the brillance of DR where I can trigger and pitch a 909 HH sample with a 606 or 808 or Linn HH - I'd like to think I could start a New Revolution someday. That's all the 909 was to begin with - a popular fluke. Just the right rythem with those sounds, and cheap to recreate (at the time )
It's amazing that a 'cherry' well maintained real 909 sells more now than a Linn Drum did when it first came out. The 909's a good beat box, but should it be THAT good? Then again, I could've bought one of Jeff Beck's guitars last week for $4000. Jeff's a great guy, but his guitar's aren't THAT good. Never got into that Genuine 67' Fender Strat sound? Though I can relate a little better to it than this 'pristine 909 recreation'
Think Rich might've been better off to make "House Is Dead. Long Live Orion" T-Shirts. El Capitain can thank the 909 on 'Disco Sucks'.
More staying power than a therimin, got to give it that.

Why would I bend my goals because of obstacles? lower my expectations? Thats absurd and quite weak... especially coming from you of all people here! For the record, I use XR-909.. I love XR-909 sound.. I just *want* more features added to it.. if anyone is reading anything else beyond that then they are not seeing reality. That said, you have to admit that more features = more possibilities. Why would you ask to be limited in this fashion? It provides little means for creativity since the only other option is to use a method with reduce dynamic ability and sound quality... no thanks from me..
Ehh it does sound different based on the level of velocity applied to it... remember it wasn't a sample based instrument.. its mostly an analog synth.. IT IS NOT SAMPLE BASED. well only the hats and the cymbals were sampled.. kick, claps, and toms were generated on the fly.. theres a lot you can do with that.. for you to tell anyone a single sample resolves matters with a straight face is quite a thing to do.. why bother multi sampling instruments if this is the case? one sample can do it all... but we all know better than that...
The timbre of the 606 isnt as capable as the 909 for the style of music I write.. each has its place.. just as the 808 has in hiphop and rap.. like it or not..
Well thats down to your opinion... but why are we arguing this on a wishlist request? True though they werent well regarded at the time of release.. but the same goes for quite a few roland units that have become popular.. it doesn't mean they are bad (as opinionated as that term is).. it just means people at the time of release saw little use for them.. inverse popularity..

Why do you repeatedly chose to take potshots at me?
Request: Updated XR-909@El_Capitan: this forum is filled with reptilian's from a pre-historic age. so let them play their reptilian games and have their reptilian conversations and chuckles among themselves. due to the hostile environments on other forums reptilians have found this forum to be their home.......a message from the near future

Why do you think it's a potshot to begin with? It's how the history worked - Disco was big, then all of a sudden it became trendy to promote 'Disco Sucks'. Dance music took a plunge, and survived under the guise of 'New Wave' And until some band or producer came up with that unmistakable House beat on the 909, and arranged a big party in a warehouse...There's your origin. Had not some radio dude in Cleveland or wherever say 'Disco Sucks' in the late 70's, chances are the 909 and House music may not have been invented. So to get the whole 'House Is Dead' thing rolling may give you young amoeba's and parasites (as Suneel would deem you) a new place to flourish. A new lifeform to take place. Maybe with a new and improved 909, maybe with something else. Without revolution, you're just a republican 'staying the course'. And no young creative person wants that label - do they?
Request: Updated XR-909Look DS its Reptilian not republican and its Rave-o-lution not revoltion.

i didnt, another pathetic post that was neither informative or helpful from a slightly sad but more often annoying individual who seems a smidgeon bitter about something in his/her life
Request: Updated XR-909I'm surprised over the sensitivity for a old beat box. If we all had to work with a Univox SR-120 in OP for 10 years, I could understand.
But we need that one that 'goes to 11'. I just hope it's going to be that unique when Rich unleashes it. I'm going back to the piano to work on 'Lick My Love Pump' for a bit anyways.
Request: Updated XR-909oh my my! looks like i hit a reptilian nerve

Request: Updated XR-909Ooohh...the 909's getting an update? Nice...still waiting for that crazy tomcat/xr909 mutation...but if the 909 gets any new features, that's good by me...
Request: Updated XR-909I too am looking forward to the update of the Xr909. As it is now I hardly ever use it. Still it is a nice feature to have access to.
Request: Updated XR-909What? You don't know why is the 909 so famous?
This is one of the reasons: Jeff Mills Personally, if xr909 is going to be revised, I'd like to see it going more in the direction of the elektron boxes. In fact a pattern oriented virtual studio that imitates hardware studios should be looking to the state of the art besides those synths from the past. Seriously, have you been near a machinedrum or a monomachine? They're DSP, pattern oriented, but they're so good to work with... Richard, just 2 words: parameter lock
