I've never used the built in effects in Orion's Sampler. Think they are there more for Soundfont compatibility than anything else.

exactly...use the FX in the menu if you want more control and better sound

Yes those were provided for SF2 compatibility, as far as I recall. The effects built into the Zampler are a much better choice here.
