Hi
I recently downloaded the Antidote rack extension for Reason v8.0 and it is killing my cpu.
I'm using a Mac Book Pro (2012) with 16gb 1600 MHZ DDR3 + 2.7 GHz intel core i7.
Everytime I load up 2 or more Antidotes the sound starts to crackle and then the whole song glitches until it crashes.
It's rather annoying...particularly as the Antidote sounds are so lush...especially the bass - which is the worst culprit for crashes.
I've tried running Reason at 32bit and reducing the buffer size...and I've also downloaded a memory cleaning app and I make sure that all other applications are closed when using Reason...but to no avail.
Q1: Does anyone else have this problem with the Antidote?
Q2: Is there anything I can do about it on my current mac?
Q3: Would it solve the problem if I bought a top-of the-range Mac Pro Desktop with 3.0GHz 8core Processor and 64GB memory?
Thanks in advance
Will

Re: ANTIDOTE CPU USAGEI will preface this by saying I have no idea how CPU speed throttling / power profiles are handled in OSX, but I know that on my i7 Thinkpad I was able to significantly improve audio performance for CPU heavy synths by creating a new Windows 8.1 power profile that changed the processor's minimum idle speed state to 90% instead of 5%. This of course causes it to drain the battery much more quickly, but it completely solved all of the crackling issues I was having with big synths in Orion.
I don't think these low-wattage mobile chips are able to ramp-up their clock speeds fast enough to keep up with heavy real-time audio, so it's better to just leave them clocked at 90-100% all the time, at least when you're working on music. Even the default "High Performance" power profile in Windows lets the processor idle at 5%, and I wouldn't be surprised if OSX is the same. Brian "balistic" Prince

Re: ANTIDOTE CPU USAGE
A1: Just for reference, I can run 15-20 instances of Antidote on my old 2009 dual-core (Core2Duo) iMac without any glitches or crackles, so there's definitely something odd about how your laptop is either handling CPU usage or the audio card. Theoretically you should be able to easily run more than twice as many on your system with power to spare. A2: Reason running at 32-bit or 64-bit shouldn't make a difference in this case because it isn't a memory issue and you have plenty of RAM. The buffer size should be increased to reduce crackles though, not decreased, but that might be what you meant. I generally run my audio card buffer size at around 256 samples as this is well below my threshold of latency awareness while playing, but 512 can also work well if the audio card is struggling. In Reason's preferences under 'General', what is your CPU Usage Limit set to? Try setting it to none and see if it makes a difference. Also, as Balistic mentioned, definitely check OSX's power management settings under system preferences to see if it's currently running in a low power profile to maximize battery life. A3: I wouldn't mind a Mac Pro, but it'd be total overkill for me.
Re: ANTIDOTE CPU USAGEHi,
after i updated my iMac to Yosemite i have also a huge CPU usage problem with Antidote. But this is only a problem with the RE Antidote. When i play a song with Antidote in Reason it needs much more processor capacity than before. I use exactly the same song file than before. I turned off transparency and App Nap for Reason. But I also saw no difference. Could there be a problem between Antidote and Yosemite ? Maybe it's time for me to do a fresh install. Best regards
Re: ANTIDOTE CPU USAGE
I believe there might be, yes. This isn't the first time I've seen this behavior reported, but I haven't updated to Yosemite yet, so I can't personally verify this issue. If you've not done so already, perhaps also send this to the Props via their support page: https://www.propellerheads.se/support/c ... ame=Reason I suspect an R8 point release is coming soon, so the more feedback they get on any potential issues with the new MacOS the better.
