Hi:
First post!
Over the course of the last month I'm noticing an increase in nasty CPU spikes from Dune 2. I'm roughly equating this time to since I upgraded to 2.5. At first I though it was a specific parameter triggering these (too many voices, ambient reverb, excessive polyphony etc etc) but really it isn't. I'm getting walloping spikes on patches with zero fx, little-to-no polyphony, one or two voices.
Am I the only one? One of the first things I fell in love with about Dune 2 after purchasing it last spring was the jaw-dropping minimal cpu usage. And now it's gone (sniff, sniff) all gone...
btw: nothing significant has changed in my studio.

Re: Dune 2.5 CPU SpikesFirst off welcome to the forums. I have not noticed any increase in CPU demand since upgrading to version 2.501 on two different systems running several different DAWs. However I don't own Studio One so can't comment on it.......
If you can narrow down the steps needed to reproduce the spikes I'll be happy to test here and report any findings.
Re: Dune 2.5 CPU SpikesHey thanks for the response!
Ok, since initially posting I uninstalled/reinstalled both Dune 2.2 and 2.5 and the problem persisted throughout. So I guess I cannot blame 2.5 exclusively. (and why this problem didn't surface earlier I really cannot say...) One thing I am noticing: Multithreading def seems to be at the heart of this. When I turn it off, the spikes go away (although the average cpu usage comes up). So, for instance, on a pad running 3 voices with 8 voice polyphony and a few fx it'll run at a solid 20-25 cpu hit with multithreading off. Same patch with multithreading on will run at say 10-15 cpu hit Plus those wild unpredictable cpu spikes every so often (spiking anywhere from 50-100, depending on buffer settings). Obviously raising buffer seems to help, but not that much. Could this be something with Multithreading and Studio one...? Any other Studio One users here...? Hope this clarifies things a bit!
Re: Dune 2.5 CPU SpikesAhh ok I have seen reports about Multi-threading causing problems in some DAWS. Let me do a forum search and see if I can find any info. I'm not sure if anyone still here owns Studio One.
EDIT: Ok I found this thread about a similar report in Studio One: http://forum.synapse-audio.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=11483&p=111246&hilit=Multithreading#p111246 I don't know if the original poster in that thread solved the issue as he has never posted here again....
Re: Dune 2.5 CPU SpikesThanks for the link! Definitely some overlap in that person's issue (most notably multithreading problems with Studio One). However one big difference with him is judging by his screen shot his cpu overheating was more sustained and not a millisecond hit (like mine).
I've been jammimg on Dune 2 with my Windows Task Manager performance panel up and would say that the avrg numbers I'm getting are app 4-6% usage (this is in Studio One with nothing else running - no external fx, soley the test Dune track). I'm also noting that when there is a spike, and it's audible and noted in Studio One's performance meter, it does not seem to register on the Windows task manager perf meter. Further, I'm noting no spikes or performance issues with buffer on high (1024). Wish I could just keep it parked here but as a keyboardist-composer really can't get my jam on with all that latency! Also, the more I'm on the hunt for this issue the more I'm seeing it's sort of elusive. Sometimes there are spikes; sometimes there aren't (with same patch under same conditions). I should also mention that I'm on a Fireface 800, and on machine specifically built for music (minimal background stuff running, no internet) and that I've never had such problems with other plugins (including cpu-hogs like Serum and Bazille - which while obviously hitting cpu hard never resulted in such spiking). And just to reiterate: there is no spiking with multithreading turned off. Just more sustained cpu usage (obviously). Is this just an issue with Dune 2 multithreading and Presonus Studio One...?
Re: Dune 2.5 CPU Spikes
It would appear so. Do you have any other DAW/Hosts you can try ? For what it's worth our main system specs are pretty similar (i7 Win 7 x64) the only difference is our soundcards (mine is an internal Delta AP 192) and of course our DAWs. At this point I'll have to turn it over to the developers Rich and Marcin. Hopefully they will have some further suggestions or at least will look into the issue of how DUNE 2, Multi-threading, and Studio One perform together.
Re: Dune 2.5 CPU SpikesI have an uninstalled copy of FL lying around here somewhere. I can install it when I return from a biz trip next week and check...
Meanwhile, thanks for turning over the issue to the said developers. Also I plan on posting this issue on Presonus' S1 forum so hopefully I can get some relevant info there that I can pass along:)
Re: Dune 2.5 CPU SpikesUpdate: just snuck in a little time to (re)install my copy of FL Studio. Been jamming on Dune 2 here the last 15 mins or so with no problems - no spikes or cpu issues using the same presets with multithreading enabled.
Def seems to be a Dune 2 multithreading - Presonus Studio One compatability issue (at least Studio One version 2).
Re: Dune 2.5 CPU SpikesOk thanks that helps a lot. So we can rule out it being a system issue which it shouldn't have been since you have a well spec'd machine. So now I'll let Rich and Marcin take it from here.
Re: Dune 2.5 CPU SpikesThanks T, I appreciate your help!
Re: Dune 2.5 CPU SpikesJust tried the demo version tonight, so very latest version.
Can also confirm ASIO Realtime meter spikes in Cubase 7.5 using Dune 2 with multithreading ON. The ASIO average meter can be around just 10% yet I sometimes gets lots of realtime spiking going on. Switching multithreading to OFF fixes this problem, and because its pretty damn cpu efficient its a non-issue anyways leaving it off
Re: Dune 2.5 CPU SpikesWelcome to the forums Arksun. Can we expect some patches for DUNE 2 ?
Yes there have been other reports concerning Cubase and DUNE 2. I'm not too sure if there is a solution in the works.
Re: Dune 2.5 CPU SpikesPossibly
I was trying Spire, Dune2 and Serum for the very first time last night, interesting to compare them alongside the older generation synths! Yeah Cubase doesn't seem to play too well with plugins that try to multithread themselves internally. I've noticed even with Diva, using that in multithreading can result in less max cpu efficiency overall than just using single threads and letting Cubase assign the thread for each channel as it does.
Re: Dune 2.5 CPU SpikesHopefully you'll decide on DUNE 2. Yes it does seem counter intuitive that Multithreading could actually be less CPU efficient. Here I always have MT enabled and have never encountered an issue but I only use Sonar, Reaper, FL Studio and Orion. I don't know if there is anything Synapse can do if the issue is on the DAW side........
Re: Dune 2.5 CPU SpikesI'm a bit late to the party, but I think this issue is not related to the specific VSTi that you are using. I have been comparing S1 pro v2.6 versus Bitwig1.3.8, using Spire. Using exactly the same patches in both hosts, S1 was showing spikes while Bitwig did not. On the KVR forums there has been a lot of discussion about the horrible CPU efficiency of S1 when compared to other hosts. If you ask me, there's some suboptimal threading in S1 (and possibly other hosts) that doesn't play nice with multicore VST's.
And BTW Arksun, I ran into the exact same problems with Diva. Apparently, it is OK to use one instance with multicore option on. But as soon as you have 2 Diva's running both with multicore, the CPU spikes start. The solution is to use multicore only on one instance of Diva (the most hungry one) while having the others run without multicore. BTW, I have Dune 2 since 2 days now, and I am flabberghasted by the really low CPU usage. Even complex patches with 16 note polyphony and a ton of effects seem to use only a few percent of my i5. That officialy makes it the most efficient synth in my collection. Very happy!
