Hi All -
I am a fan of Dune 2. I have demoed it extensively and I love the sound. I want to buy it but I am having a problem with it in Logic X.
For some reason, the demo installer I had was for version Dune version 2.2. So I am not sure the problem still exists in 2.5+. Unfortunately my demo is expired and I cannot test Dune 2.5+ to see if the problem still exists.
The problem does not occur with Native Instruments synths in Logic X, so I am led to believe that it is a Dune issue.
Here is the issue: I am an EWI (electronic wind instrument) player. I use MIDI breath to trigger the volume of various synths by sending MIDI Breath to the filter cutoff on analog synths, or to operator volume of FM synths.
I am able to play the synth comfortably and it sounds exactly the way I want it to *while I am playing it.* If I setup an aux bus for the audio from Dune 2 and record the actual audio coming out of the channel strip of the virtual instrument track Dune 2 is on, that also sounds the way I want it to upon playback of the recorded audio track.
The problem is, MIDI playback of the recorded MIDI data on Dune 2's track in real time produces an audio result that is different than what I hear while playing. The audio result during MIDI Playback is also different than what is heard on the audio recording of the audio output bus of what I played when actively controlling the synth in real time.
The original audio result is smooth and responsive, like I desire. The undersirable audio result of the MIDI Playback version is jagged, blocky, and notes cut off & start too sharply. The MIDI Playback is wrong. I can't figure it out, I've tried everything.
This does not happen in Logic with Reaktor from Native Instruments, for example, which makes me wonder if there is something wrong with the Dune 2 synth.
I have made some sample tracks. The "audio playback" tracks are the ones with the sound I want. The "MIDI Playback" tracks are jagged and unresponsive and sound funny. Please help me!

Any ideas?
Thanks,
Matt

Re: Dune 2 MIDI Playback Glitch - Logic XI have confirmed that this problem goes away in Reaper. I love Logic though. Why is this happening? Some sort of of setting I have going on wrong in Logic?
Re: Dune 2 MIDI Playback Glitch - Logic XCheck the Global Settings tab, in the central monitor. Specifically, check the MIDI Smoothing setting, you may want to choose the "Strong" mode to smooth out abrupt changes in the MIDI CC data stream. Furthermore, it is worth checking whether the audio latency settings (i.e. audio buffer size) is the same in Logic and Reaper.

Re: Dune 2 MIDI Playback Glitch - Logic XHi Richard, well I'm in Logic X, and I couldn't find the "midi smoothing" option. However, your suggestion did lead me down a different rabbitt hole, and I believe I have figured out the issue. Apparently, after scouring the web for clues from a different angle, I found out that there is a selection tab in the "project settings -> recording" menu called "MIDI data reduction." Why in the world this is even a feature, I don't know. Anyway, I unchecked that box, and the MIDI began recording correctly & the jagged playback performance issue is gone. So, thank you very much for your assistance!
Just so I know for the future, would you mind telling me exactly where to look for "MIDI Smoothing" in Logic X? I know I have seen that somewhere before, but I couldn't find it in the manual or while hunting around in the program. If anyone else has this problem, I thought I'd share a screen shot of the culprit menu check box. At "MIDI Date Reduction", you want to have that unchecked! Re: Dune 2 MIDI Playback Glitch - Logic XHi
The MIDI smoothing is in the bottom right of the display in the DUNE vsti. Peace ---=u f o=--- /Radiation Mutant / Snee-Nee-Iq
