Hi,
i have buyed the DUNE 2 and i am wondering whether it is possible to create punchy and snappy bass sounds. Playing with the filter envelope only produces gentle "clicks", but not the typical "in your face" bass which is characterized by fast envelopes.
Are there other user swho can confirm this oder are i am just missing some "trick" to get this working?
Thanks for any help
Regards,
markspoon

Re: DUNE 2 - Envelopes / Punchy BassesThe problem is due to the free running oscillators. Try switching on oscillator reset.
Re: DUNE 2 - Envelopes / Punchy Bassestry this

Re: DUNE 2 - Envelopes / Punchy BassesMark, can you explain the "problem" with the running OSC a bit more in detail and why it prevents from making fat bass sounds? I would like to get a bit more into Dune2.
Re: DUNE 2 - Envelopes / Punchy BassesImagine a sine wave that starts at phase zero, I.e., amplitude increasing from zero, and multiply that by your envelope, it will still look much like a sine wave. Now shift that sine wave so that it is starting from a peak and multiply by your snappy envelope. It will now resemble a sawtooth wave briefly. That means lots of harmonics where there shouldn't be any, this is the click that you get at the start before it settles down to what it should sound like. All synths AFAIAA with fast envelopes have this problem. Similar sharp transitions or discontinuities occur with badly designed wavetables. Such wavetables will also click.
I can draw up some images to explain if this is too confusing
Re: DUNE 2 - Envelopes / Punchy BassesThe same will happen with release set to zero.
Re: DUNE 2 - Envelopes / Punchy BassesThe SH 101 doesnt have this problem with zero A/R

Nice Bass..............

I dunno.......this sounds like a pretty fat bass.......... You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

maybe fat bass is different than punchy and snappy bass ? Yamaha CS-30, Roland SH-1, Roland MKS70, Focusrite Scarlett 18i6, Yamaha FS1R, Oberheim Matrix 1000, Novation Remote 37SL, Korg Legacy, Alesis M1Active 520, Novation Launchpad Pro, Push2, Intel i7-7700HQ
Re: DUNE 2 - Envelopes / Punchy BassesThis is copied from Sound on Sound's Synth Secrets part 34:
Finally, there's the high-frequency click, and again we benefit from a sonic short cut. Because the attack of the ADSR is very rapid when the Attack is set to 0, the VCA creates a discontinuity at the start of the sound. For reasons we need not worry about, this discontinuity contains (or more properly is) a very short burst of high-frequency noise, and it's this that produces a click when the sound is triggered. I'm forever reading complaints on various on-line forums from players who bemoan the click at the start of their sounds, and write to ask whether their synths are faulty. Likewise, I've lost count of the number of times that I've answered this, explaining that it is the desirable consequence of truly snappy contour generators and VCAs. Note that this article is about analogue synths, so some analogue synths also have this clicking. Come to think of it, I do get this on my Waldorf Pulse, which has particularly snappy envelopes.
Re: DUNE 2 - Envelopes / Punchy BassesI think "Snappy Envelope" is in the same league as "Analog Warmth". Both are mythical beasts...........
Re: DUNE 2 - Envelopes / Punchy BassesSnappy means fast
Re: DUNE 2 - Envelopes / Punchy BassesReally ? Thank you Doctor Obvious...........
