Resizable GUI for DUNE 2

Postby Yorrrrrr » Thu Jan 07, 2016 12:57 am

It seems all synths and audio programs in general are migrating to resizable GUIs, because of the super high resolution screens.

In that pic you can see DUNE 2 is starting to look small.

Thoughts?

Small! It's twice the size it needs to be and it's taking up almost a quarter of the screen in that image.

 Different point of views, I guess. Anyway, the point I am trying to make, it's that a resizable GUI is a neat feature and a tendency for new plugins. Soon I plan to move to a 4K screen, and for my taste, DUNE 2 is going to look small. Fl Studio and its plugins are ready, Sylenth1 is ready, Spire is ready, FabFilter plugins are ready, ValhallaDSP plugins are ready, etc, etc..

I always use DIVA, LuSH101, and Predator in "huge mode" in the studio. Dune is a perfect size for me there but on the laptop it's tends to be a bit too big.

I'm all for multiple gui sizes but an not a fan of Vector graphics such as FL Studio 12 and now some of it's plugins ( does anyone really use them ?). The funny thing is the one plugin that really needs resizing is Sytrus and it's postage stamp size gui. I guess it's on the to do list but people have been complaining about it's size for years.............

BTW, remember that the ability to resize works both ways: not only to make the GUI grow, but to shrink it. So, it would be useful for anyone.

I'm guessing it might actually be more doable to just make different size skins. That way we'd have this for "normal" desktop use, then a big skin for 2K/4K screens and smaller ones for laptops and such. I'm thinking that might actually be quicker to do, too.

Indeed. There is no need for dynamically resizable vector graphics or anything like that. Just a few presets of sizes would do fine.

+1 to that. DIVA has gui size selections from 70% to 200%. That range should satisfy anyone from a net book to a cinema screen.... :)

Vecor based graphics which are scalable would be great (like Equator and a few other synths). In general i wonder why the UI on desktop tools are so far behind the tablet app market.
Why need i all this retro looking knobs on a virtual screen? :?:

Because it's much easier to do it with raster graphics, which you only need to load into memory. With vectors, you are also raising the CPU usage, since it constantly needs to calculate and update their position, colors and all the parameters that go with it. Plus, all synths would at some point start to look alike.
And quite frankly, personally, I don't really like that tablet flat UI at all.

Why? Because we can, that's why ;)
Plus, you get a feeling like you're operating a real thing, or at least an emulation of it. Devs usually do that sort of things if they model a synth after some known brand and then give it a look that can be easily recognized.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I assume, as no-one has done anything different, that there is no CFG file with Dune, only the ability to swap out bitmaps. i.e. To change the look but not the layout. If you can't change the layout, you can't make bigger or smaller skins.

DUNE 2 has a config file. It contains the following:

"The plugin size is determined by the "Background.png" image size. The minimum size of the plugin is 500 x 355 pixels".

The default skin is 992 x 704. The config file also contains entries for X-Y coordinates for gui elements.

Does that mean if you resize the background image everything else gets auto-scaled and positioned correctly?
