in our audio lab @ school (mechanical engineering specialized ^^) we use audition 3. It's really powerfull but I hate it's workflow.
Wavosaur offers incredible feathures !I CAN4T BELEIVE IT.
I'll use it espacially for it's matlab/excel rendering mod.

Sound Forge 9For me ... I have checked few audio editors ... Waveosaur, WaveLab, Audacity, GoldWave ... but no one is so good as Sound Forge. Finally I have bought SF Audio Studio (v.9). This is simply and not expensive version for base things (I don't need so advanced options like full SF has and for working with Orion it is just really advanced).
It works very well on Vista and most important, very fast. For me the SF's workflow is excellent. Anything I can do here I can do faster than with others, starting on shortcuts, colours and ending on vely good sound's quality. Why not others? Audacity - workflow is horrible and very bad organized WaveLab - is ok and quality very good - but costs more Waveosaur - in fact is very good and very similar to SF, but ... GoldWave - sometimes it makes me really angry (mainly selection tool is horrible) The rest of above listed editors I didn't try. Is my thinking ok? yup! I don't really need SF for heavy processing tasks though, mostly just trimming samples for Orion or other stuff, so for me this is a minor inconvenience, having to convert 32 to 24-bit sometimes. Even if I did master a track in SF, I wouldn't be too concerned about the quality loss going from 24 to 32 bit and back. It seems today's mastering plugins are optimized for realtime use, surprisingly I haven't seen many tools scan the whole file & then do their processing. The tools would have complete information, a godsend for dynamics processors. Might be due to the poor way offline processing is handled, ie such a 'scan' mode is not in the specs, and can be realized only using ugly workarounds. Thus you can master in Orion in realtime. That's what most people seem to do anyway. Admin - Synapse Audio Software
