New system - Orion Crashing!

Postby Kat » Mon Mar 02, 2009 5:33 pm

I hope someone can help, this has been baffling for far too long now!

Orion crashes randomly anywhere between 5-15mins after opening.

Generally when clicking on the edit piano roll button and when editing in the piano roll, it also crashes whilst doing other things such as flicking between generators.

When I say crash I mean: my monitor goes black and the visual signal is lost, the sound card loops the last 5ms that was playing, sometimes this is a constant bleep, the power light for the computer stays on and does not appear to ever turn off.

There is no warning before it crashes, it just goes.

The 'audio engine always running option is off', background apps are minimum.

Spec:
Gigabyte S-series - GA-G31M-S2L
Intel Core 2 Duo, E6550 @ 2.33Ghz, 2GB RAM
160GB SATA Seagate Hard Drive
Creative SB Audigy Sound Card

Windows XP - SP2 - Build 2002. Orion 7.603

VSTS Vanguard 1.61 & Albino 2.0.1

Orion used to run fine, it does not like this spec for some reason, I need to try running it with minimum VSTs, I am also going to try another sequencer to see if it is Orion or not. Other than this the computer runs fine.

I am so confused and frustrated this has been happening for roughly 5 weeks now and I am stuck, the company I brought the computer from do not really want to take it back now if I cannot fix it I have wasted nearly £300 pounds, not good!

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Forgot to say, a Memoryt checker, CPU stress test and hard drive test have all been tried, apparently there is no problem with them. I am begining to think it is either a driver error or VST problem.

Do you think updating would definitely help?

Actually I forgot to say, again! Sorry. I have replaced the motherboard, processor and memory.

The whole computer crashes / freezes.

your specs look OK, I run a very similar setup.

Is your onboard soundcard disabled?

Maybe also disable floppy, serial+parallel port if you don't need them.

Have you installed all the motherboard chipset drivers?

This is usually the very first thing to do before installing graphic card drivers and soundcard drivers.
Check if the PCI slot you are using for the soundcard shares any ressources with other devices.

Are you using Creative or ASIO4ALL drivers? Does it crash with either of them?

Are you using a lot of CPU when working? Over heating? Faulty displaycard drivers?

Sounds like the whole system hangs, Orion not being the fault here. Possibly clash with audio/display drivers or just overheating doing it's problems on memory, PSU or CPU/mobo.

It sounds like this:

http://forum.synapse-audio.com/viewtopic.php?id=6307

I have spent many many days to check system, drivers, hard drives, rams and many many more things. I have installed many different drivers in different versions. Nothing and noone helped.

For me that was also very randomly.

Any problems just resolved Vista installation.

If You have Core Duo, install Vista and set up it very precisely (XP has not good management of Dual processors). It is possible to work on Vista without probs and make it as a fast system.

Maby Orion makes some specified operation which is just blocked by Intel Core 2 Duo under Windows XP? (sorry if it sounds as stupid question).

Have you installed the drivers of tha new hardware components?

Also install some simple diagnostic software, e.g. to check CPU temperature and such.

Hi Intro-one,

That sounds exactly like the problem! In a strange way I am glad it is not just me! It is annoying, all I want is a good computer to write music on!!!

I did not want to install vista but I will try after I have tried the other tests, for example updating Orion, using another sequencer. I think you are correct in saying there is some specific operation that the Core 2 Duo cannot run under XP.

I have tried disconnecting the audio card and it still crashes.

All drivers are installed, updated bios, I will try a CPU temp test though and will also disable the sound card. One of my friends said to disable the onboard firewall, I do not know if it has one.
I am using creative direct sound, it crashes in ASIO and WAVE MME.

7-20% CPU power is used, I have tried to run as few plug-ins as possible as I think this may also cause the problem,

@Lance - In my case I have been testing my system for a many days with different diagnostic software. I have found nothing bad or crashed.

@Kat - I have also checked many things in bios (almost every configuration in different sets). For me there were no difference if it is sound card, graphics card or other hardware or driver.

@kat - believe me - Vista is not so bad. I have been thinkgin I will never install it, but after I have done that I must say, I am supprised. After some time spent on configuring it - this system is stable and fast, even faster than XP. Only one bad point is Vista launches long (about 3 minutes for me), but later no probs.
And much more I am supprised since I saw that Vista often finds problems and adviced resolves of those problems.
