orion orphaned process

Postby suneel » Fri Apr 10, 2009 10:33 am

very often when i quit orion another orion process exists.

i cannot terminate this process from the task manager or from the taskkill command. microsoft process explorer tool reveals this to be an orphan process. see the image

I think this may happen with some ASIO drivers? Do you use ASIO?

It for sure happens with ASIO drivers and that is why not once I've asked about ONLY SINGLE INSTANCE for Orion.

There are only two ways to close the Orion's process:
- reboot system
- close specified Orion's handles in ProcessExploder (but not all handles schould be closed in fact)

oh i only have one instance of orion always. my audio card behaves bad with 2 orions in asio.

i think its an orion issue, because a thread of orion is an orphaned. the parent thread gets closed and the child should be closed too. perhaps this thread does asio related stuff. depending on the os this child thread will be kept waiting for a time or remain throughout the session.

anyways each time it happens and i open open asio starts giving clicks and pops. i did not have this problem with prev orion version.

It seems that other application reserves asio before Orion starts.

Yes, Orion could check ASIO status before run and/or disable audio if audio is busy.

@suneel - if You turn off Engine "always running" then You probably schould haven't that issue.

There's program you can use to dump state of the application (mini dump) which can be used to debug. Richard, you can also use the address to see what line it's hanging. Either ASIO or midi device drivers are acting weird (easily could be bug in the driver's syncronization as well) especially if running 32-bit Orion in 64-bit OS. You could try if it hangs also with the 64-bit Orion.

AS I said, it's probably a deadlock. Orion waits something what's not going to come. There is a program (cannot remember now which - I think I might have mentioned here before) which can make a mini dump of any application, crashed or not. Useful when program is in deadlock.

orion orphaned process

Postby Marcin » Thu Apr 16, 2009 8:41 am

For example when I run SF more than once and try to use ASIO more than once with SF (even if reserved by Orion) - SF displays warning and audio is stopped. With Orion I have or crash, or just case as suneel has showed. Does Orion even check an ASIO status? I've never had probs with that since I wrote my single instance app - which checks running instances of Orion and ASIO status before Orion's launch (if there is an running instance of Orion or ASIO is in use, app closes without launching an Orion) - but this app can't be provided for all, unfortunately.

But as I member, I've had also probs with holded processes of orion.exe even without using ASIO - and I think mainly that is why I've started ask about single instance.

Orion should give the ASIO initialization failed error or so.

Indeed, but even if Orion shows initialization error then anyway process stays running and/or crash occurs.
