Which Sampler?

Postby Steven_Blair » Mon Apr 23, 2012 12:37 pm

I have been testing out a couple of Samplers the last couple of weeks and want to make sure I get the best one available before I go and buy it.
I hav been using Battery 3 and more recently Kontact 5.

Anyone on here have any advice which to go for / share experiences or alternatives.

I really like the Battery Interface, but I can't seem to do a simple thing such as cut a Sample from 64 notes to 48 (by dragging the note back to 48) It continues to play the whole sample. Searching on the internet indicates you need a new Cell then arse around with the ADSR to cut it, which I find unbelievable.

Kontact seesm simpler to use, but the UI is a little crushed and I found it hard to navigate once I had a few Samples loaded.

They aren't cheap, which is why I want to try and get as much information being I purchase.

Or even better, Synapse-Audio make some upgrades to Sampler as I would prefer to give you my money :P

my first thought is that battery is not a sampler, if you are looking for a sampler is not the right tool
but on the other hand it could be use as a simple and easier sampler.
if you want a sampler to use nice and big sample bank go with kontakt it is the de facto standard
there is 36 product by native instrument and 87 by other manufacturers listed on their website.
my last word will be check komplete (499€) before buying kontakt (379 €)

What do you mean cut from 64 to 48?

Dont have either so cant comment, except to say kontakt is prob the most popular and flexible.

Krminal,

Imagine I have a sample which is 64 notes.
In Orion if I drag this back to 48, it stops playing at 48, but in Battery it keep playing :| (hope that makes sense)

Just out of curiosity, what do you use for playing Samples?

sorry, doesnt make any sense....a sample of what? a 64 note sequence? (if so that makes sense, but i cant imagine why you would want a sample like that)

From what I'm hearing, a lot of people complained about that in other samplers. Orion's sampler is the only one that does that, that I know, and that's what people are missing. It's like their entire work is based on just triggering, disregarding the length of the notes, much like DrumRack. Dave, you're probably thinking about one-shot samples, but think something longer. In FL Studio, for example, you can't cut the sample when you want it, just put one note and if you put a 1 minute sample, there's no way to stop it, it plays the entire length.

People say that Orion's sampler is outdated. I find it more than suitable and still quite versatile for anything I'd need to do with it.

Surely if a sampler has a vca env you cant set it to only play the duration of the note?

Battery is a drum sampler, so prob only triggers samples, you need a proper sampler with envelopes.

Orion's sampler still does that better ;)
Imagine the annoyance if you need to change it, automating the env all the time.
