More on Vista GlitchingI've adjusted just every possible setting in Options>Audio Output and I still get the glitching. On examining my pc more carefully while Orion is running, there doesn't seem to be any need to disable any background processes. The laptop is a powerful Intel Duo 2 Duo Core 2.00GHz with 4 GIG Ram. I monitored the CPU load when Orion was running with other software and it fluctuated between 6 and 40% and the occupied ram was approximately 50%. So in myu view the pc isn't over loaded and Orion should be able to perform without the glitching. As previously mentioned, this is a Vista specific problem and I cannot figure out what in Vista would cause this. Orion is running fine without the glitching on my old desktop XP pc which has a much less powerful CPU and only 512MB ram. Also, my Mackie's Taacktion 2 doesn't have the glitching in Vista so I think it might be an Orion issue.
More on Vista GlitchingIt might be just as you write, a problem with Orion.
Two last things though: have you downloaded the service pack? It fixes some specific issues with Vista, and is generally quite great in its own right. Plus, see the manufacturer and see if there are any driver updates for sound.
More on Vista GlitchingThere was an article in the last issue of Computer Music talking about glitches and drop-puts and DPC latency. They suggested using this tool first to check for DPC latency before doing anything drastic to your system.
You can find the DPC latency checker here: http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml I've installed and run the program without any problems. The latency on my system, which is not dissimilar to yours is about 200 microseconds with some peaks approaching 1 millisecond - all within an acceptable range for audio/video streaming.
More on Vista GlitchingAlso, are you using ASIO, DirectSound or Win MME drivers?
More on Vista GlitchingHere's another thread on glitching. I've had glitches in Orion on different hardware running both Vista and XP. I don't get it in any other hosts I've tried.
More on Vista GlitchingThanks for these helpful replies.
I'm using ASIO but I've tried switching back to Win MME to check on the glitching. The latency checker is very helpful. Although I haven't had problems with other DAWS (I've used mainly use Tracktion but have tested a few others) including running many wav files simultaneously there are peaks which shoot up above 1 millisecond during the check. I got a message suggesting I check some of my device drivers in Device Manager. I'm going to work on this now. I've begun using software I used a lot in the 90s (Jammer Professional) to generate composition ideas. There is no glitching when Jammer tirggers Microsoft's Wavetable sounds. Incidentally, Jammer is a great tool for different types of music but I use it in a subversive way. I compose (for example) and arrange a jazz piece in it but by the time I've changed parameters and exported the midi file it sounds new age or ambient or soundtrack. I love turning things on their head. Also a bit off topic, I hope to put up a website one day like you folks. I've lots of music (e.g. used in the Volume & effects section of this video tutorial: http://www.transparentcorp.com/products ... torials/... oops..you'll see my real name at the bottom) to upload including commercial work though I would need permission from those companies!
More on Vista GlitchingI forgot to answer the service pack question. I'm running Vista with Service Pack 2 and I think it checks for daily updates (if any). Correct url: http://www.transparentcorp.com/products ... tutorials/. I also did an 8 minute commissioned piece for a marketing campaign they had in 2006.
More on Vista GlitchingI am pleased to report that the problem has been resolved. After an exhaustive testing of my device drivers in Device Manager including disabling and enabling and lots of other hair pulling and exhausting tests I used the latency checker again and the report was about the same. I then went to my Magix Music Studio and it occurred to me that if it and everything else was working perhaps I needed to go back to markholtuk's question about the ASIO, DirectSound or Win MME drivers. I had changed them before but this time I did a reset and tried DirectSound. Voila....no glitch! Of course, this means I can't use ASIO or WinMME (both of which cause glitching) but at least I can avoid glitching in Orion in Vista with the DS option. It would be nice to see support for ASIO in Vista in a future upgrade of Orion.
More on Vista GlitchingFunny, cos I have glitching with DirectSound, but not ASIO. Have you checked your settings in ASIO and fiddled about with them. I'll check what mine are when I get home and let you know. I'm using ASIO4All, btw.
More on Vista GlitchingThat's really strange because my ASIO is ASIO4All as well yet we seem to have the opposite problem. I'll look into my ASIO settings and see what I can find.
More on Vista Glitchingmakhotuk...could you kindly share your ASIO settings with me? I would like to compare them with mine.
More on Vista GlitchingI e-mailed you earlier. For completeness for the thread I'll add what I wrote here:
"The setup is quite basic. The buffer size is 512 samples. No latency compensation, and none of the options are active. This gives me 16.3 ms input and output latencies, which is sufficient for my purposes."
More on Vista GlitchingI got the e-mail and very much appreciate your reply!
More on Vista GlitchingIf you are getting glitches, all you need to do is increase your latency until they go away. It sounds like you have a very basic set-up, so it shouldn't matter how big the buffer is. It sounds like you are simply over-thinking the problem.
We run a 512 sample buffer because we trigger drums live in Orion [from an OctaPad], we play softsynths real-time from a controller and we sync to external hardware. If you aren't doing any of that, then just ramp your buffer size up until the glitches go away. Dell G7 (Hexa-Core i7)|Cubase Pro 10||Analog Keys|Ultranova|MicroMonsta|Uno|Skulpt|Craft Synth 2.0|

More on Vista GlitchingMake sure You have turned off Microsoft Search Service.
Make sure You have turned off ReadyBoost service. If there are still glitches, make sure You have all wirelles devices disabled and/or network devices disabled in system. That schould help enough.
