Started back in 2017/18 and one of my last albums using Orion, "Flexion", an 8-track minimal dub techno album has just been released on German label Odrex Music, on CD, digital, and limited release vinyl.
Primarily mid-paced dub techno, it contains elements of funk, deep minimal dub, live guitar, warm organic and darker electronic sounds, and plenty of ubiquitous tape hiss and crackle.
The album represents a period where I was looking to create a collection of tracks with more groove and dub, more entertaining and lively, while still retaining an element of minimalism.

Re: SUBSET - Flexion - Minimal dub techno albumI'll guess I'll just never get Dub Techno. A three part 8 bar loop run over and over for 7 minutes.
Is the constant white noise some kind of watermarking on the preview tracks ?
Re: SUBSET - Flexion - Minimal dub techno albumHi, thanks for taking the time to check it out, glad to hear you're liking it. The response so far has been really positive, along with radio play from a few countries. Anyway I've added you to our mailing lists to stay informed of all future releases, thanks for joining the dub techno family.
Re: SUBSET - Flexion - Minimal dub techno albumUmmm ok whatever you say.
If you can get artistic satisfaction from such a mindlessly simple genre then more power you. One of the things about my music that bothers me is it tends to be repetitious. I try very hard to add variation in both composition and tone and timbre. I don't want the listener to get bored. So when I hear something like your "Fusche" which is basically a shaker loop, a bass loop, and a synth stab played over and over and over for 7 minutes I wonder what kind of person could listen to that without getting bored out of their minds. I find it mind-numbingly repetitious. But like I said if creating such a simple composition gives you some satisfaction and makes you feel like you're accomplishing something then congratulations......
Re: SUBSET - Flexion - Minimal dub techno albumWell you seem to be hooked enough to spend your time replying so we assume all that "mind-numbingly repetitious" music isn't quite as numbing as you make out.
Thanks for listening.

Re: SUBSET - Flexion - Minimal dub techno album
I'm simply giving my review and I'm just trying to understand how anyone can get artistic satisfaction from seven minutes of the same 8 bars over and over and over. It's like taking a brush full of paint, throwing it at a canvas and calling it art. Yes it may be "art" but it earns no respect for the "artist". Oh well like I've always said simple things amuse simple minds.

Re: SUBSET - Flexion - Minimal dub techno album
Thanks! I've got one more album scheduled for later in the year that I wrote with Orion, but all my newer releases have been with a new DAW, however the release I've got scheduled for October I'm really keen to see get released - it has a lot more live instrumentation - electric & acoustic guitars, bass, mandolin... but not being Orion related I won't post here.
Re: SUBSET - Flexion - Minimal dub techno album
I have no respect for minimalism. A Jackson Pollack "painting" sold for $140 million but how much talent does it take to stand on a ladder and drip paint onto a canvas ? I find minimalism in any art form pretentious. When I think how many hours real musicians spend learning and practicing their instruments and honing their skills and talents I am disgusted when someone comes along and calls a mindlessly simply genre like Dub Techno "music". I have absolutely no respect for the genre. It's for beginners and pretenders. Sorry that's brutally harsh but then such is life.
Re: SUBSET - Flexion - Minimal dub techno albumluckily, not everyone has the same taste.... variety is the spice of life
for balance, even great musicians make crap music... Windows 11 Home - 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-12400 2.50 GHz -32GB RAM

Re: SUBSET - Flexion - Minimal dub techno album
Being a real musicians and writing song need very very different skills. i really don't understand how you can compare them
i can't agree more, i never like those great guitar heroes playing faster than my brain can understand it's crap, not fun, not pleasant at all Yamaha CS-30, Roland SH-1, Roland MKS70, Focusrite Scarlett 18i6, Yamaha FS1R, Oberheim Matrix 1000, Novation Remote 37SL, Korg Legacy, Alesis M1Active 520, Novation Launchpad Pro, Push2, Intel i7-7700HQ
Re: SUBSET - Flexion - Minimal dub techno album
What do real musicians end up making and playing ? That's right, songs.
There's a difference between crap and mindlessly simple. Just like there is a difference between a Rembrandt and a Jackson Pollack. You may have a preference for one over the other but there's no arguing which took more technical skill and talent. I'm sure his stuff is considered good "Dub Techno" but it's such a mindlessly simple genre that little effort or talent is needed. Like the difference between walking a mile and running a 26.2 mile marathon. I have much more respect for someone who can run a marathon and don't take anyone seriously who brags about walking a mile. I'm not saying the music I make is any better but a majority of the effort is to try and keep it from being mindlessly simple and repetitious. Here's something I threw together in five minutes and I know nothing about Dub Techno. Yea it sucks but it goes to show anyone can do Dub Techno with very little effort. I could have let it run for 7 minutes like real Dub Techno but spared the listener to only 45 seconds. I am Dub God
