Dune 3 quantizater modulator?

Postby Deleted user » Wed Feb 10, 2021 10:39 pm

Hi Im trying to apply a random modulator to pitch but I would like to tame it to some scale like in actual modular synthesis. Is there a way to do this? I dont think there is but I will request it

You can use one (or more) of the wavetables as CV controllers.

Basically, each wavetable slot contains a DC offset that is a value between -1 and +1. You can do this simply by entering the appropriate number (between -1 and +1) in the wavetable editor for each slot.

You can then use that oscillator to modulate whatever you want to using the mod matrix. In this case Pitch semi. If we tell the mod matrix that we want to modulate pitch by +/-12 then we add +12 in to the mod matrix. +1 and -1 will now map to +12 and -12 semitones.

If you want to transpose up to 7 semitones then create a wavetable slot and type in 7/12 in to the formula text box. If you want to transpose up 5 then that would be 5/12. Make sure to turn off interpolation of the wavetable.

You can then use random to modulate WT position et viola!

I've included a patch that shows this.

Of course this DC offset per slot approach can be used to control other things and can also be used to design custom LFOs etc.

That is bloody brilliant! Then you can have Osc pairs in each layer running a different sequence and have two different rates using the two Arps.

I see why you make the big money now........... 8)

Thanks, it is quite nifty and I knew you would appreciate the significance :)

You could have MSEGs or LFOs running different wavetables at different rates for different sequences/CVs too.

There's definitely a lot to explore.

But, errrrmmmm, where's that money?

One pretty cool thing with the patch that I posted is to have more than one voice. Random will give different notes for each voice giving an interesting chord effect. Add in extra notes for something more complicated.

You'll have to talk to your boss about that big money.

How does one play a specific sequence of notes rather than random ? Say I program 0,5,7,12,7,5,0 how can I get it to play in exactly that order ?

Use MSEGs for that.

I've noticed something strange with the scaling with MSEGs and keytrack as sources, unless I'm doing something wrong. If I find I want full scaling then I need to make two entries for amount - one at +100 and a second at +25 to +27.

I've added a simple patch so that you can see what I mean.

Note the subtle use of interpolation. It basically acts like what would be called a slew limiter in modular land.

Is it me or does that patch seem to struggle staying in tune over time?

Using an LFO seems to work as well.

Not noticing any tuning problem here.

LFO works as well of course and you can get a nice up down arp-like effect using a triangle wave.

This is great! I was looking for something like this.
I tried creating it by myself after reading your first comment (Mark), and I couldn't get it to work. So I downloaded your fxp and saw that what I was missing was setting a non-zero constant value to the Osc 1 Semi (-100 in your case, but it seems like anything <-5 or >5 works). Can you explain that?
Thanks,
Dave

I can't explain it unfortunately. It was a rather serenditpitous find.
