Hi folks,
it was mentioned a couple of times but it never really got Rich's or Jouni's attention. So, I decided to post it as an official 'wish'.
I'd like to see a FULLY UNLINK MIDI from HARDWARE function in 8.0 Rich stated out that it is very easy to implement and would help me and many others who were involved in discussing that topic.
Problem is that once you've linked your hardware to a track, you can't fully unlink it. It happens quite often that I want to automate something, have the appropriate piece of hardware (Behringer BCF-2000) but am not using it. Problem is that after a while, you can't remember which knob or fader was linked to what. When restarting to work on your track after a while, you turn a knob which was originally linked to let's say the cutoff of the sampler or whatever, you just destroy your track without noticing. A fully unlink and link on demand makes sense and would solve this problem.

UNLINK MidiWhat do you mean precisely with unlink track? Unlink everything in active generator or unlink the whole project you're working on. Also what would others prefer, current knob, current generator or everything?

UNLINK MidiI think the best thing would be to be able to unlink everything, the whole project.
Normally (at least I do) you do not need to have a complex MIDI linking. It is more that you want (just right now in the production process) to automate the cutoff or whatever to finalize the recent task. Therefore you simply want to link a knob with your hardware to do so. After that, you might want to automate something else, using another hardware knob or fader and link it. If these tasks are done, there is no need to have your hardware linked to your song anymore until there's a new task to be done. Which might be in a day, a week or whenever the point in the production process will be. Therefore you should be able to RESET the hardware/MIDI link to 0. Which means fully unlink everything. If your project still 'remembers' the linking of the old session but you old podhead certainly don't, you might run into trouble by moving knobs, faders etc. without knowing. This happend to me a couple of times and I just stopped using my BCF-2000 and put it on the shelf. Which is a pity. I think that linking is more a temporary thing while producing a track. UNLINK Midiif by looking at a generator knob or mixer knob i can find out visually it is linked, only then can i goto the knob and right click it unlink it. But if i dont know where it is linked in the first place then i cannot goto the knob and unlink it.
which brings the question how can you list all the knobs are linked? 1. one can have an midi assignment table which lists the cc and the knobs linked. 2. OR you have a mode in ui where if you switch it on it will show a line from (0,0) to every knob that is linked. you can turn this on/off to know what is lined 3. OR you show a knob in different color or a red-circle around a knob to indicate it was linked otherwise if the above mechanisms are not possible then global unlink all option will unlink midi mappings. ( like reset all automations ?)
UNLINK Midinot reset all automations but unlink midi mappings. The automations have to be the way they were recorded of course.
UNLINK Midii know DZ just trying to give a similar example.
ps=> for automations you can store defaults and reset will load the default values.
UNLINK MidiSomething added under the Generator options like a 'Reset' beneath VST and MIDI CC Mapping? Not a bad idea.

but it should be a global function, unlinking the entire project, not based on individual generators. that would not solve the problem of knowing which generator had been automated.
UNLINK MidiUnlinking the whole project just because you accidentally linked one wrong knob seems a little heavy-handed to me. Why would you need to unlink a whole project? I can see a use for unlinking a single knob [fix an accident] or one generator at a time [work with different instruments one by one] but not a whole project.
Rich, does Merge bring over MIDI links? Will Templates? I've never linked anything to a controller in my life. Dell G7 (Hexa-Core i7)|Cubase Pro 10||Analog Keys|Ultranova|MicroMonsta|Uno|Skulpt|Craft Synth 2.0|

Still not a bad idea Dazoid - Maybe something in Song Preferences then? Click on a box to 'Ignore All Controller Links', save the song, reopen, take check mark off from preferences, and start again? I'm raised on chicklet buttons and alpha dials mostly, and my EX5 has 6 knobs - which is way to many for me to contemplate! But some of these new controllers and synths with 30+ knobs on them - I could see your point. And/or great if switching gear for shows and other venues too.
UNLINK Midi+1 for unlink.
Linking/unlinking was the only feature I ever liked best in Ableton. Hitting caps-lock would highlight every movable area on the screen - clicking one and hitting your controller linked them. Phreque.com - Weapons-Grade Awesome.

bones Everything is written in my comment. Just read it... It makes sense. And noone talked about accedentially linked something to whatever. Last edited by DaZoid on Tue Feb 03, 2009 7:33 am, edited 1 time in total.

I think not blowin' your dough on a BCF2000 makes sense. Th e4situation you have put yourself in was the first thing I thought of when those kinds of things first started to appear. Of course, Templates could be your saviour, allowing you to have the same links for every song. It's actually a much better use of that feature than anything else I can think of.
I mentioned it because it's about the only use I could see for it. Your suggestion would only work for you. i thin a lot more people might be interested in being a little more targeted when it comes to making changes like that. e.g. If you had just spent half-an-hour setting up links to work live and you run out of control knobs before you manage to link everything you want to control, you wouldn't want to have to erase it all and start again. It would be much easier to simply decide which parameter you could best live without and just make one change.
