Hi,
there is discussion in another thread ("Input
on Skin Required") about how to display the
EQ controls in the mixer for the next big rev
of Orion. That made me think...
...I realized I rarely use EQ and if I do, I
think I could live with just inserting it as an
Insert Effect. For instance, the filter I usually
need the most is a low-cut filter to reduce
unwanted low bass. I just put in an instance
of Low Cut Filter.
How about removing the EQ from the Mixer
strips and making the EQ "section" an effect?
That way, if the user wants it, just put an
instance of "EQ section" or whatever it would
be called in one of the Insert slots for that
channel. There's a slimmer, trimmer Mixer
channel. We got rid of the +48V button;
now, eliminate the EQ!

remove EQ from OP8 mixer and make EQ section an effect?I think the EQ should stay. I prefer to have it in the mixer, like it should be, than another window.
remove EQ from OP8 mixer and make EQ section an effect?Take the EQ out of mixer and I'll be looking for a new sequencer. Simple as that. As I said in the other thread, you use the channel EQ to create your mix, not to EQ channels. You need to see them all, to get a feel for how they all interact, in order to do the best possible job. Your thinking is wrong-headed if you believe you don't need to see all your EQ, all the time.

remove EQ from OP8 mixer and make EQ section an effect?i use the channel eq on at least half the channels, it's very musical in my opinion and really easy to get the sound i want.
anyway, i usually find width is a problem with mixer strips rather than height, let's face it, the mixer doesn't get higher each time you add a strip... and if you really don't want the orion eq in you can do it with skins... http://www.harddisco.co.uk/images/defau ... _no_eq.jpg or even with no sends or inserts either! look: http://www.harddisco.co.uk/images/short_mixer.JPG ( i think krim requested that one!) btw both those skins can be downloaded form that same page on my site - just the mixer folders for the 'default' skin.
remove EQ from OP8 mixer and make EQ section an effect? It was really an academic question, not "rip out the EQ,, just some thing to think about.
With all the talk about GUI's, I had a think about how I worked, with the mixer. I mainly set off with one of Richards EQ presets and tweak it to sit in the mix. I only adjust one mixer strip at a time and go by sound rather that where the button is turned to. I had a think about what advantage there would be with a popup EQ or separate EQ,,,, it could be any size, third party if preferred ( in a insert) and any type you found useful or visually pleasing. The mixer strip could be made narrower because sends could be in a vertical row above the inserts. For the record, I personally prefer traditional looking GUI's rather than flat Ableton or the weird Ohm force versions, but i though I'd just explore another approach with you guys. Do any of my ramblings make any sense? Don't all shout no at once

Fully agreed! Orion is an Orion - respective and perfect software and I am sure, Richard will not trash it!
remove EQ from OP8 mixer and make EQ section an effect? The mixer is the only thing that I can really associate with still. It looks and acts like a Mackie. To take EQ off it, it'd be like a Zoom 16trk. (BTW - which is REALLY user unfriendly so far.) To me it's like a kitchen - sure, store the groceries in cupboards, and keep perishables in the fridge. But if you start covering up the oven, the toaster, the sink - it just ain't gonna be a kitchen now is it?
remove EQ from OP8 mixer and make EQ section an effect?dont move the EQ!
btw I too can make music in the kitchen. I always use the sync. did you know that Tangerine Dream (way fucking early) used to go live with tape recordings of regular household noise, such as frozen peas spinning round a collander - pumped through a tape echo......... ---=u f o=--- /Radiation Mutant / Snee-Nee-Iq

It's about interaction between elements. You add a chorus to a channel purely to improve that particular sound, whereas you use EQ to make all the various channels fit together to form a mix, very often to the detriment of individual channels. i.e. You should be taking stuff out of individual channels to make them fit in with the things around it, so as a solo instrument, it will sound weaker after EQ. Often when you add a new sound to a mix, you will get better results by EQing other channels to make room for it, rather than EQing it, which is why you want to be able to grab any EQ at any time, as well as be able to see all your EQ settings. For me, I'd be less likely to need the gain fader than EQ, so you may as well hide the whole strip as just the EQ. remove EQ from OP8 mixer and make EQ section an effect?Just as no one can't safely and reasonably modify a everyday toaster, I wouldn't even dare try to improve upon a common everyday mixer such as OP's either.
Slots, lever, and settings - for those who like it tanned to charred.
remove EQ from OP8 mixer and make EQ section an effect?Orion's mixer is very close to what I was used to in a hardware mixer. Having the EQ there is a big part of that. I agree with the rest of these guys. The EQ shouldn't be touched. I think the only thing I would support in regards to this would be if there were drop/hide buttons on the mixer, so that individual sections could be hid if the user wanted.
However, I wouldn't mind a more visual parametric EQ as an effect, but that's been discussed before.
remove EQ from OP8 mixer and make EQ section an effect?I can see where the OP is coming from. Sure people are used to having eq's in most hardware mixers but in a software plugin host we have a whole world of flexible and powerful plugin eq's at our disposal so why stick too closely to a hardware metaphor? I'm sure the built in eq is good sounding but personally I don't think I have ever used it - if I need an eq (and I don't use them much tbh) I have Air EQ at my disposal which is much better sounding (and a few built into my DSp cards) so to me the built in eq is kindof in the way - it would be nice to have an option of getting it out of the way at least.
