ydm.. I am very much a novice so my response may not be much use to you.
But.. when mixing I always try to cut EQ rather than boost. If I am happy with a channels individual sound, I try to cut other channels to make room if I can. May this is wrong I don't know..
BTW My vote is to keep EQ as part of the mixer strip. Just seems a logical place for EQ; especially so that I can see how all the EQs of the individual channels are lined up. Makes tweaking your mix easier I think if you can see/hear how your various EQ's are set in relation to one another.
As for finding it hard to visualize your mix as the channels stack up, have you tried a plug-in called INSPECTOR ??
