Cymbal SynthI saw Rich mention that he was planning on working at generators in the future. One type of internal Orion generator I would like to see is a cymbal emulator synth.
Cymbal Synthyou can get electro cymbals out of Tomcat, but I assume you're after something more realistic.

Cymbal SynthYou assume correctly. Tomcat does a wide variety of percussion sounds, but it is quite limited with respect to cymbal like sounds.
Cymbal SynthNot sure it's possible, haven't yet heard any additive synth or physical models that sounded any good.
I'd just build myself a huge library with quality stuff. Krim posted a large set of cymbal samples once that were totally amazing, but unfortunately I don't have them anymore or remember where he got them from. There were from SABIAN cymbals I think, you remember Krim? Admin - Synapse Audio Software

Cymbal Synth Try these ones from http://www.geocities.com/duro7878/gs_drums.html
There were another ones from TBT called TBT drums samples http://hem.bredband.net/tbtaudio/archive/archive.htm With samples of Paiste , Sonor and Zildjian ( 35 Mo ), but the link seems to be dead now , nothing in the archives about drums now ; if you want i can send to you the folder but maybe mine is not complete . I usually delete what i'm not going to use !
Cymbal Synthi do remember those samples, they were free, from an official site (you had to dl each cym seperatly) but i cant rememeber where....
found these tho http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2009/ ... l-samples/ Last edited by Kriminal on Thu Mar 19, 2009 2:29 pm, edited 1 time in total.

Cymbal SynthI will check out Ogun, looks interesting, thank you!. I am currently using "Cymbal" by www.xoxos.net. Their cymbal synth is based on a mass and spring model and does not sound too bad, and the accompanying drum synth "Mass Effect" is nice also. From what I have heard either mass and spring modelling or resynthesis seem the most likely methods to produce useful cymbal emulations.
However as a microtonal composer any VSTi is only useful for the subset of my work that is in standard 12tet tuning. That is why I was hoping for an internal Orion generator. I try to avoid using samples. Last edited by borion on Thu Mar 19, 2009 9:00 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Cymbal SynthKrakli used to have something as to cymbals and noise as a standalone as i recall? Ian had me beta it, and it was primarily a white/pink noise generator with ample ADSR and filters on it. Wasn't bad for synth effects - but far from Sabians and Zildjans et al.
I'd rather run a real cymabal sample through effects to make it 'synthisized' as oppsed to making a synthesizer try and sound relatively 'real'. Good finds tos and krim, thanks!
Cymbal SynthOgun is pretty good, too bad it does not have microtuning capability. If you could combine the mass and spring attack sound of the xoxos Cymbal synth with the sustained additive cymbal sound of Ogun it would make a really nice instrument. I realize of course most people prefer to use samples, however I do think that the two synths discussed here at least show that decent cymbal emulation is feasible.
I have not had time yet to play much with Ogun, but it seems like an interesting synth. In my opinion an additive/resynthesis based synth would be an excellent addition to the Orion family of internal generators.
Cymbal SynthI got very interesting effect sounds out of Ogun, but I'd never use it for cymbals tbh. Haven't tried xoxos...

Cymbal SynthA good resynthesis synth should be capable of a lot, but I expect they will continue to be judged on their ability to do cymbals for many years to come. I made one in Csound and it is pretty bad, so maybe I am more impressed with Ogun than I should be.
In any case I believe that cymbal emulation is an area of synthesis that is just becoming viable and hope to see better products soon.
Cymbal Synth
Why? To me that is like saying "I try to avoid recording anything I have made". When samples are the best option, and this is definitely a case where they are, why on Earth would you not use them? Dell G7 (Hexa-Core i7)|Cubase Pro 10||Analog Keys|Ultranova|MicroMonsta|Uno|Skulpt|Craft Synth 2.0|

Cymbal SynthBecause those samples are not always in tune with what I want. That means trying out tons of samples and retuning them and testing them with each song. Imagine a synth that produced a good quality cymbal sound with full dynamic control of spectrum, attack, etc. A synth is more flexible than a sample, thus potentially has a greater range of expressivity.
Despite the fact that clearly everyone here has decided that cymbal synthesis can never work, companies like ImageLine and Xoxos oddly enough appear to think there is enough interest to devote significant development effort into it. You should contact them and tell them how foolishly misguided their efforts have been.
Cymbal Synththose synths will never create an accurate cymbal, they know that too....they are for cymbal like FX really...
if you need a cymbal, you use a sample (even if it means you have to spend time finding the right one, but thats the same for all samples) Last edited by Kriminal on Sat Mar 21, 2009 3:57 pm, edited 1 time in total.
