I'm squeezing more and more out of instruments in a track by recording automation of cutoff/resonance/volume/pan/decay/etc, and there are a couple of stumbling blocks that make this a little harder than it needs to be.
Example:
I want my SC-Gate Level to be the same for the entire track, except for a single one-bar rise before going back to how it is in the rest of the song. (see image below).
To achieve the shape shown during bar 84, I:
(Click below to watch a video demo)
http://www.phreque.com/images/stories/misc/param_edit_snapbackpost.wmv
1. Record the change via mouse/MIDI controller while the song is playing back
2. Stop the song or ffw/fr to make the line show in the event editor
3. Open the event editor
4. Move to the area where I've just recorded an automation, zoom in, and carve out the end point of the change. Then zoom in and make sure I've got the line drawn correctly to bring the parameter to the exact level where it started.
Alternate method
1. Before recording, make a note of the parameter's position by hovering over it with your cursor and checking the bottom-left of the window.
2. Record the change via mouse/MIDI controller while the song is playing back
3. Stop the song or ffw/fr to "set" the change (draw it on the EE)
4. ffw or fr to the bar you want the automation to end, hit record, set the parameter back to the value you made note of earlier, hit play to record it as an event, stop, and check the EE to make sure it's correctly back.
What I'm proposing:
"Parameter Snap-Back"
Enable a control key to hold while making changes via mouse/MIDI controller during playback with Record armed. Any changes made while the control key is held are recorded to the parameter's events. Letting go of the control key disarms recording, and instantly returns the parameter to the value it was set to before the control key was pressed.

Parameter Snap-Backez way in deed what you suggested.
But like always, with lines/gaussian curves with points with values + snap to grid it would be easier that the current one. Your idea doesen't seems hard to code, that a good point. Orion 8, Live 8Le, Cubase 4 LE, Cantana, APC40, UC16, Fostex PM1MKII, Q9550, 4G0, 1,5T, 22"+15"

I'm struggeling very often with that. The solution you described is very good. It is very often that one wants to get back to the starting position after automation. Cutoff is a very good example.
Parameter Snap-BackGreat idea
Parameter Snap-BackAnother benefit of having this method available is it interrupts creativity a lot less - sometimes there are a lot of different parameters in a smallish space that I want slight one-time tweaks to, but I have to stop and edit each tweak, especially with controls that are reliant on each other (e.g. cutoff + reso). If I could just let the parameter snap back to the default I set, I can run through the track, add lots of tweaks in one go, and just spend the editing time afterwards perfecting just those tweaks, and not the surrounding event data.

Parameter Snap-BackAbsolutely! This is almost a must have for the next version. This is exactly what is annoying me for years. And as described, it's not just pain in the ass it also breaks the workflow.
Parameter Snap-Backive wanted this for hand drawing pitch changes...i tried many times using the pitch bend wheel, but MIDI timing is so bad it was a waste of time...so plus one from me too.

Parameter Snap-Backentirely true I bother myself too in this problem.
i hope this comes in 8.0 Did You Know you can download my albums on 1albums.com and you can promote your own there to

Parameter Snap-BackYet another thought - it would be rad if said control key could be bound to MIDI input - a foot pedal or pad on my Trigger Finger would be perfect for punching in and out.
