note indicator in piano roll

Postby origami » Thu Jul 12, 2012 2:17 pm

I think it would be handy if when you play a note with your midi keyboard or the qwerty keyboard, there would be some kind of display of what note or key in the piano roll is playing. Some colouring of the key, or an actual animation of the key being pressed. It's a tiny improvement but it's quite useful.

Of course a sound comes out. But any visual help comes in handy. I don't see it useless, almost any daw I've tried has something like it. When you play your midi keyboard, you don't necessarily know the octave you're playing. At least I don't. If the key is highlighted in the piano roll is, frankly, quite useful.

Well it's just a wish anyway.

Bingo! +1 on this request. This is one of the things I miss from FL Studio, Reaper and Sonar X1. As Origami says sometimes you don't know where you are on your midi controller in relation to the Piano Roll. Having the note you are playing show up on the keyboard on the left of Orion's Piano Roll would be a great addition. It seems silly until you've actually gotten used to having it then you miss it a lot....if you have a Midi keyboard that is........ :)
This is FL's Note On Indicator:

It's harder to see in this screenshot from Reaper but the keys move just like the keyboard on DUNE giving you instant visual feedback of where you are in relation to the Piano Roll and what notes are playing.........

Yess that's the thing. And I guess it would be easy to do. I guess, I'm no programmer.

So let me get this straight - when you press a key on your MIDI keyboard, you want to see a key press in the Piano Roll? Couldn't you just look down at your fingers to see which key you pressed? I assume what you really want to know is which octave you are in, right? This should be consistent. i.e. It will be the same in every instance. So once you work it out you'll always know.

I don't know how easy it would be to do as the keyboard in the PR is just a line graphic. i.e. It is completely inert. Seeing it in the status bar is probably more likely, unless Rich wants to take the keyboard from Dune and re-purpose it or something. Nice bitmap keys do look a lot slicker, though, but may not scale as readily when you zoom.

Bitmaps would be nicer, but I don't think people would mind if the keys just changed color when they're pressed, be it via controller or a mouse, just to ensure avoiding any graphic issues such change might introduce when zooming (not sure if Reaper allows zooming since it seems to me it's using images). So, basically, that could be just one or two more parameter lines in the skin INI file for color changes, and no issues whatsoever.
I think that would be simpler.

Bones, the thing is this. Sometimes I record what I play with my keyboard. But sometimes, I play something with my keyboard but instead of recording, I paint the notes. Then I have to find in the piano roll the exact note/octave. A visual help would be...helpful :D

How far would you like to zoom in?

Or Zoom Out?

Exactly. Like I said it's something that once you've used it in other DAWS you miss it in Orion. Doesn't have to be fancy like Reaper just make the notes played light up in Orion's current Piano Roll strip......... :)

Looking at your fingers doesn't tell you where you are in relation to the Piano Roll position.

I give a +1 for the wish and IMO a nice colouring/highlighting would be good enough.

I qouted the image just to show the common (GUI) artifact with keys pressed next to each other. See around the C3, the shadow, not realistic as both keys are pressed. But I wouldn't mind that either, simple or fancy, an indicator would be handy sometimes.

And in the case the piano roll couldn't be highlighted, maybe the corresponding line in the grid.

Point taken. I don't have Reaper, so wasn't sure.
