Hello!
I am trying to modulate an MSEG rate via the mod matrix, with no luck. I have tried with Sync on and off (I see the manual says it should be turned off for rate mod to work, but that is all it says on that topic), in Loop/NoteOn/etc. modes, etc. I have the mod matrix amount set to +100, and am trying various sources (other MSEGs, LFOs, etc.). I have even set it to Const and plugged different numbers into the Amount, but the rate does not change!
Hopefully there is something simple I am missing. Thank you!
Dave

Re: Modulate MSEG rate in Dune 3?Try this patch. It's crude but shows that MSEG Rate can be modulated. Just hold down a note for a while:

Re: Modulate MSEG rate in Dune 3?Hello Teksonik..
Ohh so you are right. I played around a bit and, though it is pretty finicky (you have to set the Rate knobs in good spots so they cooperate with the MM Amt), it does seem to work. Thank you for the working example! However I think I've narrowed down a potential bug (or, again perhaps I'm missing something?). If I decide to modulate Distortion with MSEG 2 (instead of Osc 1 pitch), the rate mod just stops working. To illustrate this, I started a new patch (also crude) with some pitch modulation similar to yours, and I've attached it here as mseg_experiment_1. That one does work. Then I changed the MSEG 2 mod destination from "Osc 1 Semi" to "FX-1 Dist Drive". Here the rate modulation just stops working. (The Dist Drive modulation works, but it stays the same speed.) I've attached that as mseg_experiment_2. So to sum up.... If MSEG 2 modulates pitch, MSEG 1 can properly modulate MSEG 2's rate. However, if MSEG 2 modulates distortion, MSEG 1 fails to modulate MSEG 2's rate. Any thoughts welcome! Thanks again. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
Re: Modulate MSEG rate in Dune 3?Thank you for posting the examples! The reason for the difference is that the first destination is a voice target (Osc Semi), while the second one is a global target (Dist Drive). There is a few restrictions when using global targets as opposed to the regular voice targets, since most modulation in D3 is polyphonic, not monophonic. Off the top of my head that affects the three oscillator outputs as sources and the MSEG rate as destination, i.e. they simply have no effect currently. This could be changed in a future update but remember that usually you don't want to modulate global targets with a polyphonic source, unless the patch you build is strictly monophonic.

Re: Modulate MSEG rate in Dune 3?Hi Richard,
Thank you for the details. I think I understand what you are saying--it makes sense that one wouldn't want to modulate a global source polyphonically. Interestingly, I figured out that if I use an LFO (to modulate the Dist Drive) instead of MSEG2, then MSEG1 does successfully modulate the LFO rate. And in this case that is a fine workaround, because I was using a simple saw shape for MSEG2 anyway. Thanks and keep up the good work! This is my favorite synth! Dave
