It may be just me, but I've noticed a real surge in the popularity of dj and live performance software/hardware.
(I read Dj Tech Tools blog, which is great)
Orion has always positioned itself as a pattern-based sequencer, right?
Well, the clips/session view of Ableton is in my view perfectly suited to the use of patterns
There could be many ways of doing it, but what about an Orion VST that allowed midi/audio clips to be triggered
What I'm thinking is for each 'pad' to be linked to either:
- a pattern of another synth generator, eg. Wasp#1 A3
- an audio clip direct, or via a sampler or drumtrack pattern
- a direct piano roll key on a synth generator, rather than a pattern
- a direct piano roll key on a sampler, rather than a pattern, allowing slices to be triggered
Each with options for setting:
- play looped until pressed again
- play once
- play only while held
(and these could be cycled using another midi-routed pad if desired)
Clearly this would be an expansion of live performance rather than sequencing, but it could bring in a new user base, or simply help keep the existing lot using Orion.

Re: Clips/ session view like AbletonThis sort of idea comes up from time to time and I generally think live sets could be extended, but there's other stuff in Orion that needs ironing out first.
I'm waiting for Synthmaker to be updated to version 3 when it will be incorporated in to another program called Flowstone. This will add rock solid MIDI timing, which isn't possible in Synthmaker at the moment. When this happens I'll be looking to make some live-oriented modules. In the meantime, you might want to look at some of the tools here: http://www.thepiz.org/pizmidi/ One of them is a note-to-MIDI clip trigger, which you might find useful.
Re: Clips/ session view like Abletonyeah, agreed - or 'orioning' out first ; )
I'm looking at buying a Novation Launchpad - primarily to supplement Djing, although given it's used with Ableton LE, I'll likely get more to grips with that prog (or try to! I've never really managed to figure out anything other than Orion and Acid) I guess the LE edition of Ableton may be limited vs the full version, but I could therefore see myself using that for sequencing ultimately. Personally I'd prefer to stick with Orion though. Thanks for thepiz link. Step looks interesting. I'll dl and have a play with that
Re: Clips/ session view like AbletonAbleton have had that market well and truly cornered for a decade or more. I think it would be a huge waste of development time to try and compete in that space. We have Live Sets, they work perfectly well and I think that is enough.

Re: Clips/ session view like AbletonThe original Cubase or trackers were good enough so no need for Orion then bones??
The live sets clearly have big limitations. As posted, I for one am likely to start using Ableton LE when I get a Launchpad That could clearly lead to me later opting to upgrade Ableton rather than Orion, but who knows. Not everybody uses programs in the same way as you bones I'd also note that given the amount of times I've seen you rubbish things posted in the wishlist, what DO you think should be added then?
Re: Clips/ session view like AbletonCubase is, and has always been, terrible. If that was the only option I would still be using hardware. It never had anything like the market dominance that Ableton has in the live performance space, there was always Logic and Cakewalk keeping it honest.
I am happy for Rich to decide what Orion needs. So far he has managed to turn it into the closest thing to a perfect virtual studio that I can imagine without me having to tell him what to do (despite my best efforts). I am more than happy for that relationship to continue but if he walked away from Orion tomorrow and we never got another update, I can't imagine why I wouldn't continue using it for as long as I can install it on newer PCs. It is a very mature product that really doesn't need anything done to it. Rich could keep bolting on more and more krap to keep the sales ticking over but that would be all about making money, not making Orion better. Re: Clips/ session view like AbletonAbleton live 9 is just around the corner, look into it.
Re: Clips/ session view like AbletonI don't think DAWs should be all things for all people. I know I"m not alone in this, but I find doing arrangements with Ableton very painful - but is great for the djing crowd. I find arrangements with Orion super easy and as a result wouldn't want it start covering ground that it wasn't intended to cover. I see a risk of it becoming a bit chaotic like FL Studio is now.
My only suggestion that would be a compromise would be to have the ability to trigger patterns, which would be locked to some sort of global quantize to ensure timing. You could map the patterns you want to something like the Launchpad and have at 'er.
Re: Clips/ session view like AbletonIt would be nice if the live set functionality was expanded. The whole pattern/playlist paradigm lends itself to this way of working very nicely. Keep in mind that the developers are very busy with other stuff (Dune and the RE's). Look how long we've been asking for a revised song automation system, it's been years. Nothing so far. I wouldn't hold your breath. Stick with Live, it's a unique host(version 9 looks fantastic btw) and not too dissimilar to Orion.

Re: Clips/ session view like AbletonThere has been a lot of work that has gone in to coming up with a better automation system by Richard, Marcin and the beta team. Unfortunately, we haven't found the best approach for Orion yet.
Re: Clips/ session view like AbletonReally? Ive seen one effort so far and that got dropped....well over a year ago.

Re: Clips/ session view like AbletonI think you're out of order there Dave. There was a lot of effort going on.
Re: Clips/ session view like Abletonyes 100% True.
Re: Clips/ session view like Ableton
I'm starting to think it might never come about. Richard seems to be more interested in making synths (and he should, he's very good at it). Ah well, I'll keep using Orion to sketch out ideas, but anything that requires a lot of automation gymnastics gets transfered to another host.
Re: Clips/ session view like Ableton
Look, maybe in this the solution is about automating ... (I just worry about it) http://www.google.ru/search?q=%D1%81%D0 ... 97&bih=554 I about inspired to ... Do not twist the handle, if you do not know why you need it!
