Strange black hang

Sometimes since Orion 7.6 I have totally hang of system with totally black (not blue) screen (plus processor probably goes to full usage) during press "EDIT" button on any generator (trying go to edit notes). Then only hard turn off computer (once I have leaved it for a while and was very hot - the fan was work very fast).

Please spend few moments with my issue. It is VERY important becouse I can not do anything - or I am afraid doing anything.

Time to Time I known this issue since Orion 7.6 released but after long time I have just found something possible to reproduce - please try a below link to get buggy song:

--- please do not open with link, please save on Your hard drive. Then Open Orion. Open Song. Close Orion. Open Orion again and load from last songs list.

Before 7.6 I have not anything like that - so my laptop is ok (even if I reinstall to Orion 7.5 this issue not exist - only from 7.6).

I have Toshiba Tecra A9 - Intel Centrino Duo.

Way to reproduce:
1. Close Orion.
2. Open Orion and open song.
3. Click "EDIT" button on visible Tomcat module.

If nothing hangs then:
4. Close Orion and open. Load last song.
5. Click "EDIT" button on visible Tomcat module.

If nothing hangs then:
6. Close Orion and open. Load last song.
7. Click "Tomcat#2" on visible mixer on the LEFT.
8. Click "EDIT" button on visible Tomcat module.

If nothing hangs then:
9. Click "Tomcat#2" on visible mixer on the RIGHT.
10. Click "EDIT" button on active Tomcat module.

If nothing hangs then:
11. Close Orion and open. Load last song.
12. Click "Tomcat#2" on visible mixer on the LEFT.
13. Click "Tomcat#2" on visible mixer on the RIGHT.
14. Click "EDIT" button on active Tomcat module.

If nothing hangs then:
15. Close Orion and open. Load last song.
16. Do anything else like above.

I have tested it with many many different possibilities of configurations. All time hangs plus randomly totally hangs with black (not blue) screen.

What could be wrong so? Any module, any situation I have found it is possible to hang system by orion during press "EDIT".

Maby this also will help - many time I press EDIT the sound hangs for a while and plus system (almost for second).

This is for sure also not bug in audio driver - read above notice - with 7.5 there were no hangs (plus I have tested few external sound cards + internal).

I have spent today almost 5 hours with testing it and restarting all time computer.

So I hope I am not alone and please - Orion >= 7.6 is not useful for me no more.

I had Orion simply 'quit' recently on me. Simply using samplers and non intense things? I clicked on a sampler or something to move it, and POOF! Orion was gone!

Another time I went to close a Edit window, and it kinda hung for a moment. Then I get one of these 'Something Really Unusual Occured...' messages, and I was 'Oh no! I haven't saved it yet!' But after the message, Orion seemed to work fine after?

Haven't dealt with Tomcat yet, but that just adds to my paranoia.

Like I said - when I press "EDIT" monitor blows out (totally black - like after computer is turned off) and then processor probably go to full. System out, everything out. Only processor works on full (+ fan on full). So then - only hard turn off a computer.

My issue relates to all modules - just randomly click on EDIT button makes everything gone out (there is no matter if it is Tomcat, Sampler, other internal module or some VST). But this one I can reproduce now.

That is sad! I can not work with Orion. That is horrible.

Fooling with Tomcat here per your instructions, and so far so good? The thing I can realte to your issue with is via Microsoft Train Simulator. This one 'route' on it does the same thing your Tomcat is doing essiantially. When the train drive ends, a report is supposed to come up - but the screen just goes black and hangs. I can get out of it with CTRL+ALT+DEL at least. And the explanation given is I must've made a 'bad path' in the route? I've got all the diagnostic checkers and such for it, and they all report everything is fine?

Quite frustrating and non-comferting indeed!

Hopefully Rich and Jouni can trace down this 'bad path' or whatever it is for us quickly. Trying to get MS to help... It'd be easier to bring peace to the middle east is best I can say.

New strange thing.

I have checked same things etc. etc. virtual box (with XP pro and Vista). At the same moments (clicking EDIT) once virtal machinge hanges for a while (proc full etc.) but it backed after about minute (system earlier after many minutes haven't back).

But in more cases virtual box hangs for a while and back, but system hangs with black screen and does not back.

Hmm ... strange. What is it or what could it be?

Hi -intro-one-,

I can only test your problem on a desktop, Athlon 3000+, single core, 1Gb RAM....

Unfortunately, I can't reproduce any sort of crash or hang at all, even whilst engine / song running, not running, windowed/max/min... any condition Orion is running here rock-solid. I've opened and closed Orion about 30 times so far, reloading your .sfs - even a double click on .sfs and everything still fine.

Maby the problem exists on Intel processor (or maby plus on Intel graphics driver) - or maby there are some bugs in new compiler?

I do not know. But beside my processor (above provided) I have Mobile Intel 965 Express graphics.

So currently I can only go back to Orion 7.5 and good bye any new version if nothing will be changed.

Hi, I have an Intel processor + Intel chipset based motherboard and I can't reproduce your problem. Have you tryed to execute 'eventvwr.msc' and look in the application or system log to see if they is a particular event logged in reaction to your freeze ? Sometimes very usefull informations can be found in this event logger.

Are you running Orion under Windows, or via a virtual machine?

I use Orion under Windows XP Pro.
I have described some things about virtual machines earlier above.

There are no logs about hang. Nothing in any logs. Computer when totaly hangs cann't write any logs. Just nothing.

And again - with Orion <= 7.5 there are no probs.

Few hours I have been testing hardware and I have tried many different graphics drivers. All time hangs. All time. I am affraid to use an Orion now.

What else can be wrong? During press "EDIT" to open piano roll. Since 7.6. ...

I am sad that if only one person has really big prob then it is not matter. Is it ok? I am very disappointed for this forum.

You can only say what You want, what is good and what is not good and who is better or not but You can not really help to other when it is very important and when some prob ruins someone's live . This is sad.

But just forget it...

Are you sure you use the non-SSE version of 7.61, because it has an SSE3 version too, which came first.
