Greetings all.
I've not used my music production stuff too much over recent years as I've had lots on - although did win a jingle competition using Orion
I've been using it for nearly 10 years now.
I watched some fantastic demos of Ableton 8 on Youtube.
I love the way events are shown on the curves etc.
One thing I feel Orion lacks is an ability to compose direct into a pianoroll.
A solution is of course to enter a very long pattern.
But, it'd be nice to be able to manipulate notes directly in the song playlist
Anyway, what I really came here to say was that I had a go with Ableton and like most other non-Orion progs, I just couldnt get into it! Orion is just so intuitive.
a couple of wishes:
- editable pianoroll in the song playlist
- audio 'stretching' as per Ableton. Watching the demos, it looked great the way you could just enter a sample and stretch it etc. Similarly to the way Acid handles things. In terms of useability, I do think Orion could learn a lot from both progs?
- greater flexibility in terms of window zooming
- the pianoroll and sample layout buttons in the sampler look the same - could one be altered??
Keep up the great work Rich.

For someone with almost 10 years of experience with Orion, I'm surprised you haven't noticed by now the difference between the, let's call it - cause I don't know how else to call it, PL and PR zoom levels. I'm sure you noticed that the notes in the PL appear at much smaller scale. Without having to zoom both horizontally and vertically, it would be simply impossible to edit anything in there. And zooming in and out all the time, just doesn't seem very fast to me. Not to mention that it kind of defies the current foundation of how Orion works in the PL department, at least when it comes to composing. And speaking of which, you actually can compose directly into the PL, and as long as you like (short and long, doesn't matter), but you'll have to record it though. The new pattern is created for each take, so no worries about overwriting anything.
Double click - Edit - TAB key - Close/Minimize (4 steps) versus Position playhead - Zoom in horizontally - Zoom in vertically - Edit - Zoom out horizontally - Zoom out vertically (6 steps) When you think about it, Orion actually saves you time.
Been discussed already. Rich didn't like the PS/TS algorithms that are available out there, or they're too expensive to license. I guess we wait and see.
I think Shadx mentioned that one, if I recall. I guess that one could use improvements, the current zooming seems rather steep, or rigid... whatever.
You mean the buttons for PR and Program Editor? That bothers you so much? PR button is all the way up on the toolbar, the other is on the display. How can those two be confusing? But, if that really confuses you that much, you can actually change either. Note that if you change the PR button, you change it for ALL generators, so I guess it would be simpler to just change it for the PE. It's a simple graphic. Tell what you want the icon to be, and I'll see to change it for you.
For a long time that's what I thought that's missing, but soon realized it actually isn't needed at all. SoundCloud ::: Facebook

'PL and PR zoom levels. I'm sure you noticed that the notes in the PL appear at much smaller scale.' I've noticed that of course. and yes, the notes are too small to edit What I'm envisioning is a zoom slider at the right hand side of the PL that one can use to zoom into a specific track. In addition to the whole screen zoom of the PL, that would then result in the notes being larger and big enough to edit. I think some other progs work like this? 'Not to mention that it kind of defies the current foundation of how Orion works in the PL department' true 'Been discussed already. Rich didn't like the PS/TS algorithms that are available out there, or they're too expensive to license. I guess we wait and see.' I'd missed that. Thanks for the info 'TAB key' new to me. Nice 'You mean the buttons for PR and Program Editor? That bothers you so much?' It's no major issue. I just end up pressing the wrong one too much. That's my lameness more than anything, but it is a little odd having two buttons the same? A totally separate issue... I sometimes find it hard to remember which generators I've muted/solo'd and where. Is there any reason that the generator M/S cant be directly linked to the mixer. ie. so that if ever a generator is solo'd/muted, that can be seen from the mixer rather than having to go through them one by one to see

That would, then, make it the third possible way to do zooms in the PL. Even if it doesn't pose any problem to debug three ways of zooming, there's still a problem of patterns in the PL not being directly editable, at least not yet. It's not completely excluded that it might be possible in the near future.
It's not an issue when they're on the two completely different positions: one being on the taskbar, the other on the display. Like I said, if it's a problem for you, I'll gladly change it for you. Just provide or tell what kind of icon you wish to use and say where. It's nothing more than some graphic manipulation.
Think of a generators' M/S as online/offline mode. It shuts down the muted generator, conserving its CPU usage for other things. Extremely useful if you have few of those huge CPU hog synths, and your project gets too complex for your CPU to handle to that measure that you hear awful crackling noises. Then you just put those to sleep (mute by generator's Mute button) and save some CPU. Then when you render the song, you unmute all those synths and stream it, being that it's irrelevant how much CPU they consume in that process. The M/S buttons on the Mixer, on the other hand, merely cut the signal path, but the processing of the synth and all of its assigned effects still remain. It's up to you to decide which set of M/S buttons you'll use during the production process. SoundCloud ::: Facebook
Ableton review - pianoroll direct in song playlistTHERE IS NO NEED TO SELECT ALL IN THE PIANO ROLL AS THE DEFAULT BEHAVIOUR IS TO AFFECT ALL NOTES. It is a complete waste of time and if you spent even 5 minutes using the Piano Roll you would realise it.
Yes, they do different things. Mute/Solo in the Mixer mutes the audio, Mute/Solo in the Playlist [same as the instrument toolbar] mutes the MIDI, which saves on CPU. Try it by entering a long note in a pattern and you will see that the instrument will mute instantly from the Mixer but will not mute from the Toolbar until the end of the currently playing note. You can also play an instrument from an external MIDI controller when it is muted from the Toolbar but not when it is muted from the Mixer.
