i would like to know if this is going to be in the new orionSomething that I think would be a great addition to Orion would be the ability to replace one VST with another on the fly. For example, if you have one plugin open and you have a really great sequence going, but you know that another plugin would allow you to expand on it better, being able to click on the name of the plugin at the bottom of the mixer strip and having an option to replace MDAPiano with Albino would be a great improvement for workflow.

Re: i would like to know if this is going to be in the new oThis has come up many times before. I think it is really poor workflow, simply because it doesn't allow you to try the old and the new side-by-side and decide which one sounds better. It doesn't take much effort to copy all the patterns over and build a copy of the arrangement, so it seems to me the good is far outweighed by the bad. And swapping one instrument for another can create all kinds of issues if you have any automation.

Re: i would like to know if this is going to be in the new oWell bones, automation isn't copied over in ableton when it allows you to do this very particular thing and it is actually very beneficial to the workflow because sometimes you're putting along with one synth and realize that theres another patch on another synth that would work perfectly in its place...oh and guess what? You can also copy the sequences easily too, yet the feature is still available...strange huh? Maybe its because everyone has a different way of working, or did you think Orion was programmed with bones only in mind? I realize you are an Orion purist and I applaud that, however, there are other Orion users who apparently, in your own words, have brought this up "many times before" so just because it does not suit you're needs in particular doesn't mean it wouldn't be a nice addition for others. You always have the option of not using a feature you don't like or are too stubborn and stuck in your ways to bother learning. Jesus, I've never encountered someone so opposed to change in such hostile ways as you in all my days of using any kind of forum, and that's pretty sad considering some of the political forums I've frequented in the past with their own brands of sycophant posters on either side.

Re: i would like to know if this is going to be in the new oYou can do in Orion, just set a midi Out and allow you Vsti to receive midi from Midi out, example:same midi out with your sequence to:Toxic,Wasp and Ultran,Just to say,so all 3 instruments play the same sequence, then you can choose which is better for your song, you can do with Vsti too.
Cheers

bones has been a loyal supporter of Orion, granted, and an asset to its development, but works in somewhat limited ways and has trouble comprehending any changes to Orion outside of these.

Re: i would like to know if this is going to be in the new o
So what? Go and use Ableton if you think it's so fucking good. Obviously there are some thing Ableton doesn't do very well or you would be using it. So you can add instrument replace to that list and thank Rick for showing you a better way to work. Surely automation is going to be the most time-consuming part of copying everything over, so it seems like a half-arsed solution anyway.
So you think that Orion should encourage poor workflows or might it be better if it encouraged you to work in the best way possible? You might be able to suspect another instrument will work better but you just can't know until you've tried it in context and had the opportunity to A/B it against the original. If you're just chuckin' stuff out and chuckin' something else in, you'll never know which is better, you'll just go with the new one because it's easiest. It often takes me 15 or 20 minutes to decide whether to keep an existing instrument or use another. In fact, sometimes I'll open up another instance of the same instrument, just so I can hear two different presets side-by-side, in context. Adding another minute or two to do all the copying is trivial. Dell G7 (Hexa-Core i7)|Cubase Pro 10||Analog Keys|Ultranova|MicroMonsta|Uno|Skulpt|Craft Synth 2.0|

Re: i would like to know if this is going to be in the new oOne way to do it at the moment is to select "receive midi from" (original synth) in the 'new' synth's options and mute the original synth on the mixer. That way you can try out different synths with the original sequence without loosing anything until you decide to change things if you want. A few more clicks and not what you originally hoped for , but it works and late at night it stops one of those 'Oh! f**k I shouldn't have done that' moments.
Re: i would like to know if this is going to be in the new o
I partly agree but is there then a option to clone and maybe then replace a vst? This would be a ideal solution don't you think? you can quick compare 2 instruments and even just 2 presets
I must disagree on this. for me its mostly how it fits in the mix so like replacing all the pattern bars in the song playlist is a real issue for me. A sort of copy function for all the song pattern arrangement would do fine for me either but things in pattern mode are just hard to compare and you don't want to place the patterns again... Re: i would like to know if this is going to be in the new oWell to be honest bones if Ableton had a song and a pattern option on it and allowed you to export your patterns onto the damned arrangement page I just might do that. Richard told me before though, there are almost no other applications that are as easy to use off the bang as Orion, and I agree, however, while there is almost no learning curve off the cuff, as you go on it seems to me that things get more muddled as you try more advanced features, having to make due here and having to come up with workarounds there. One of the drawbacks of pattern based sequencing is addressed in Ableton with the ability to use Midi clips. Unlike Orion, which has patterns which cannot be duplicated and edited on the arrangement page (making for poor workflow), on Abletons arrangement page you have a pattern (midi clip) which can be duplicated (copied over to the next however many bars) and then freely edited making variations on patterns easier then hell instead of having to go back and forth between pattern and song to do new variations. Everything in Ableton is also available in one workspace, which again makes for great workflow, as I use a dual monitor setup I can have my synths in one monitor and my Ableton in another. I use Orion simply for the same reason I used Fruity Loops when it was merely a drum machine, ease of pattern making and working with patterns on the fly, but thats it. The automation is poorly represented in my version. The arrangement is cumbersome. The shining jewel of Orion is its ability to do things right away, which is why it is still in my arsenal, and because I am used to the workflow in the pattern based portion. Am I going to switch exclusively to Ableton anytime soon? Probably not, and it has nothing to do with the tantrum you just threw, but more to do with the fact that I just love Orion and wish that some of the features would catch up to what alot of schools and studios are using today...i.e. Ableton, Cubase, Logic, etc. I don't think it's impossible, but I do think that everytime someone has a request and all you have is a "work-around" or some way to deal with it that takes more steps then should be necessary, it's counterproductive to actually having a wishlist forum. Why the hell would anyone want to wish for anything if all they're ever going to be told is "well, theres a way to do it, its just not very intuitive". It's like having a wishlist on the Butterfinger site and when someone asks for peanuts you tell them "well, just get some chocolate and melt it in a pan at 130 degrees and then add peanuts and blah blah blah) They weren't asking for a recipe to make peanut butter Butterfingers, they were asking for it to be built in already. Of course some of the ideas I've been given are useful and I've already been trying some of them (much thanks to all that replied constructively), but I was requesting a feature, not asking for a work around.
I am able to switch instruments on the fly in ableton, because the midi information is stored simply as a pattern on a particular track, it is not actually part of the instrument like in Orion (i.e. the pattern is built into the "shell" that the VST is loaded in) No, automation is not copied over in Ableton (well, it is, but its disabled immediately in case the VST you just loaded in the new ones place doesn't have the same controls, but is still available to re-enable in case you decide to bring the old instrument back and don't want to lose what automation you did have) It's easy, fast, helpful and intuitive as well as non-destructive. It's great for switching between virtual acoustic instruments, such as pianos and guitars when the device is great sounding (like RealGuitar) but dedicated to one specific purpose. I'm sorry that you have to be the old man that's scared of change, but I love Orion too, that doesn't mean I think its perfect as is, and it will never stop me from requesting something that I think would be beneficial, doesn't detract from it's original and intended functionality, and can be ignored by people who choose not to use it. My word. Yes my siggy has my addy. http://www.soundcloud.com/illi ...see what I do with Orion?
